– Time For A Tiara: Column by Ginna Young – - What can we get for you?

This last weekend, I volunteered to help out my fellow Cadott Lions Club, serving food during Nabor Days. I did the same last year, because they needed help, but like last year, I could only dedicate one night, which is Friday, during the truck/tractor pull.
I learned my lesson from last year, and did not wear my heavy Lions vest or my jeans. Instead, I wore shorts and a light shirt, and was I ever glad of it, because it was so incredibly humid that night.
If you were outside, it wasn’t so bad, but in the unairconditioned pavilion kitchen, it was horrible. Still, we kept on and I put in a twohour shift, that went really fast, since we had a steady crowd. In fact, at times, we were swamped.
It’s always better to be busy; last year, it kind of lagged between customers and it seemed like the night would never end. Despite that, I had a lot of fun and knew I wanted to help again.
This year, was even more fun. I got promoted from putting cheese slices on the hamburgers, to co-manning the counter, with a lady named Deb. That means greeting the customers, taking orders and serving them what they ordered, once it was ready.
We also kept on our toes, grabbing cold cans of pop out of the fridge and cold bottles of water out of a cooler by the counter.
Occasionally, when someone had to step out to go fill up the condiments on the table past the cashier or tell the guys cooking the food to throw more hot dogs on the grill, I’d step into fill their role. That meant getting nachos or a giant pretzel ready at Heidi’s station (can’t believe how many people didn’t want salt or cheese!), or wrapping up a brat in a small square of foil.
I was in my element; customer service is kind of my thing and it’s fun to interact with the patrons. Although, sometimes, that was easier said than done, the truck pull was so loud. It was actually louder in the pavilion, than it is right down by the track – I know, I took pictures of it before I checked in for my shift with the Lions.
Between laughing with customers, the “girls” were teasing that they had to behave and be their best, or I wouldn’t put them in the paper. Finally, they had me promise to do so and I am keeping that promise.
I hereby swear, that those three ladies (Carolyn, Donna and Susie) assembling the hamburgers, hot dogs and brats, are the best at what they do. Not only that, they’re a ton of fun and laughter never ran out, all evening long.
I sincerely hope I was a help to the club, as I had such a good time and enjoyed being with the girls. Thanks for letting me be myself and including me, I love you guys!
