Enrollment at St. Mary’s
St. Mary’s Elementary School opened its doors to 365 students. The celebration of the Liturgy in which all the students participated marked the beginning of a new school year. St. Mary’s 365 students come from 172 families.
Raiders and Tigers to Meet in Season Opener The Marawood season opens with a bang this Friday when the strong Red Raiders of Marathon invade Tiger Field to meet a small, but experienced Stratford team. Stratford will be led this year by senior cocaptains Larry Kann and Chuck Chrouser Award Presented to Stratford Lions Club
The Stratford Lions Club received second place recognition in competition with the 48 clubs comprising District 27-C1 of Lions International during the 1974-1975 club year. Each of the clubs were awarded points based on various activities. A plaque was accepted by Past President Bob Leonhardt and Secretary Dale Dooge.

A&B announces new appointments
A&B Process Systems, Stratford, announces the appointment of Lyle Clem as Director of Process Engineering. A&B Process Systems also announces the recent appointments of Jim Wishall as Director of Sales and Marketing and Ron Wiesman as Midwestern Regional Sales Manager.
Zion ends year long celebration
On August 20, at the outdoor worship service of Zion Lutheran Church, Stratford, the 1999 Centennial celebration was culminated. After the worship service a time capsule was buried. The capsule is to be opened on the congregation’s 150th anniversary in 2049.

Storm Damage
Lightning struck a large oak tree on the lawn of the Clarence Blake home in Athens. A limb broke off and damaged a tent and travel trailer owned by Pauline Skerbeck, Dorchester. Skerbeck travels with the carnival which was at the Athens Fair and had parked on the lawn. During the storm, a tent used to grill charcoal chicken burned after the tent ignited when the wind apparently blew the tent into the coals.
Bank of Athens is 75 years old
On September 1, the Bank of Athens will celebrate its 75th anniversary. The original Articles of Incorporation were dated August 1, 1900. Present directors of the bank are Charles Anderson, James Braun, Joseph Burger, Gordon Connor, Clarence Deedon, Norman Gahnz, John Gesick, F.W. Lonsdorf, Joseph Mullins, Graydon Peterson and Clarence Venzke.
New Business in Edgar
The Snack Shack will be opening business soon at Edgar Corners. The new restaurant will feature burgers, pizza and soft serve ice cream and will seat about 40. Owners are Leonard and Shirley Lechleitner, Jeff and LaNae Indjer and Ron and Carolyn Hahn.

Thorp couple injured in Steam Show mishap
A Thorp couple was injured Sunday morning at the Northcentral Wisconsin Steam and Gas Engine show in the Town of Wien after they were thrown from a run-away water wagon pulled by draft horses. According to a Marathon County Sheriff’s Department report, the draft horses were apparently “spooked” and ran out of control before colliding with a parked vehicle.
Tourney winner
The Marathon High School volleyball squad took first place honors Saturday at the home Lisa Siegenthaler Memorial tournament. Under head coach Carla Elliot, the Red Raiders earned a 9-1 record in round robin play.
