Volunteers are needed to help out in times of crisis

With summer storm season underway, the American Red Cross of Wisconsin, has an urgent need for disaster shelter volunteers. Disasters can strike with little warning, displacing families and individuals from their homes. Shelter volunteers are critical, in making sure those affected by a disaster have a safe, warm place to stay – and a compassionate face to greet them. Those volunteers work directly with residents, to ensure their basic needs are met and that they have access to additional services. Whether a student looking to serve during summer break, a professional seeking a meaningful way to give back, or a retiree with time and life experience to offer, the Red Cross offers local volunteer roles that are flexible and meaningful. Opportunities range from short-term disaster assignments, to long-term leadership roles. Free training is provided and no prior experience is necessary. Most needed volunteer roles include disaster response and recovery; health and mental health services; logistics and supply coordination; and administrative and community outreach support The Red Cross also offers a variety of opportunities for individuals, who would like to support disaster relief operations across the country. Volunteers are needed to deploy to help communities in need, after a disaster strikes. Whether delivering health services, supporting a shelter or distributing relief supplies, their presence brings comfort to people in need. Getting started is easy and simple. Once the application is reviewed, a local Red Cross chapter will reach out, to guide through the next steps. All required training is provided free of charge and can be completed online. Visit redcross.org, to learn more and start an application. “People often think they need special skills to volunteer with the Red Cross, but that’s not true,” said Beckie Pinnow, regional volunteer services officer. “We can teach you what to do. What we really need, are individuals who will be there when help is needed, to ensure families never face a crisis alone.”
