Taylor County’s loss is the Wisconsin State Patrol’s gain.

A large group of friends, family, coworkers and local officials gathered at the Taylor County Courthouse on Friday, July 25 to greet Aemus Balsis as he completed his last shift after 21.5 years with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office.

Balsis took a position with the Wisconsin State Patrol and is currently at the state patrol academy.

Friday’s event included a recognition from the community including the presentation of a certificate from Mayor Mike Wellner and county board member Chuck Zenner on behalf of Taylor County.

Sue Emmerich from the Chamber praised Balsis’s dedication and hard work over the past 21.5 years with the county and read statements from county board chairman Jim Metz and others who were unable to attend.

“Today marked the end of an incredible chapter for Aemus and the beginning of an exciting new one,” said Emily Balsis about her husband. “Aemus is heading off to the Wisconsin State Patrol Academy to begin a new venture in law enforcement. This is a bittersweet moment for our family. I’ve had the privilege of watching Aemus pour 110% of his heart, soul, and energy into every case, every call, and every moment of service. His commitment has never wavered, and it’s been driven by something simple but powerful: his love for this community. And that love has been returned through the friendships, the trust, and the respect he’s built over the years. The people of Taylor County and his coworkers have made it clear that he will be deeply missed in Taylor County. Aemus, your hard work has never gone unnoticed. You’ve made a lasting impact here, and while it’s hard to say goodbye to this part of the journey, we’re so proud of you and excited for what’s ahead. We love you, we’re proud of you, and we can’t wait to see what’s next. Start polishing your boots.”

Balsis thanked those who came out and said it was his desire to be more present for his children as they were growing up that prompted the move. He also noted that cases he has investigated in recent years, especially those that involved children, had an impact on him and made him want to look at other areas of law enforcement.

He said once the state patrol training is done, he will be stationed in the Eau Claire area, but said he has no intention of leaving the Medford community. He said he looks forward to future opportunities to have Taylor County in his coverage area.
