Accident Claims Life
Tragedy hit Stratford again when one young man was killed and another very, very critically injured. The car in which they were riding collided with a North Western freight train at 2:30 in the morning.
Armyworms Invade
If it isn’t one thing, it is another. This year, up to the middle of July, was an ideal growing year, and the prospects for an outstanding crop were excellent. Then the need for a good soaking rain became more urgent as every day went by. But to add another insult, an almost unheard of pest in this area, the armyworm has arrived and are here in unprecedented numbers.
Fire Destroys Tractor
Fire destroyed a John Deere tractor on the Floyd Kafka farm east on 153 Friday afternoon. The Stratford fire department answered the call. STRAFORD JOURNAL

Powerline opposition meets in Stratford
Central Wisconsin area residents met at the Country Aire Ballroom in opposition to the Duluth/Weston transmission line. Over the past two years central, western and northern Wisconsin residents have banded together to protest the proposed Duluth to Weston 345-kilovolt power line.
Bear’s Run
This year’s annual Bear’s Run will be held at Tiger Field on August 12. Area exercise enthusiasts can enter one of five age categories for the 1.5 mile run/walk or the 3.1 mile run. Preregistration entry forms may be picked up at the Village Clerk’s office.

Armyworm problem in county
Four area counties were severely hit by armyworms last week. To date, about 10,000 acres in Marathon County alone have been sprayed. Nearly a dozen airborne units were called in to combat the armyworm problem. Units worked from dawn until dark and throughout the weekend to try to control the devastating pest to the oat and corn crops in the area.
Athens doctor
Dr. and Mrs. Robert Rankin have moved to Athens and on Monday Dr. Rankin opened his general practice in the Athens Medical Center. The doctor moved to Athens from Los Angeles
Marathon girl wins in state contest
Heather Phillips, Marathon, carted off a trophy almost as big as the five year old in the Tiny Tot baton twirling championship. The event was held in Menomonee Falls. Phillips is a student of Cindy Goldbach.

Athens School District signs superintendent
The Athens Public School District accepted the application of current Spencer High School principal David Wessel for the District Administrator position. This will be Wessel’s 30th year in the education field but his first bout with being employed as a District Administrator.
Marathon police investigate attempted burglary Marathon City Police responded to what may have been an attempted burglary at Lee’s Hardware Store. While on patrol the officer noticed the front door wide open and upon further investigation that the door seemed to have been forced open. The owner arrived on scene and confirmed that nothing seemed to be missing.
