ATHENS
The Senior Citizens card group met on July 17 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.
Three games of Sheepshead were played. Tom Ellenbecker won first place and Norbert Lake came in second in the first game. Andy Hoef won first and Aaron Totzke came in second in the second game. Steve Klockziem took first and Alvira Hendrichs came in second in the third game.
Low score was Rick Schaetzl. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
Dinner by the Gazebo
Friday Night Dinner by the Gazebo will be hosted by St. Anthony’s Catholic School. The menu will consist of BBQ, hot ham and cheese sandwiches, nachos and assorted desserts. Serving will start at 5:30 p.m. and go until the end of the concert. The Old Timers concert will start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available to purchase on Friday. In the event of rain, the dinner and concert will move to Memorial Park under the arena. Friday Night Dinner by the Gazebo is looking for people who would like to serve a picnic style dinner before the Old Timers concerts. Call Jean at 715257-7353 for information.
VFW Post 8527
The latest meeting of Athens VFW Post 8527 was called to order by Commander Rick Schaetzl, with 18 members present. The Pledge of Allegiance was said.
Cheryl Engel from the VFW Auxiliary was a guest at the meeting. She presented an invitation for all veterans to attend a breakfast at the Athens restaurant on July 26. If interested, contact Engel at 715905-1412 before July 18.
Discussion was held regarding an upgrade to the donation board at the beer bar. Mark Weiler is looking into options.
Commander Schaetzl mentioned that a proposal by the group’s beer distributor has been discussed and that a group meeting with the Legion will be scheduled to discuss it further.
The next meeting be on Wednesday, Aug.6.
Attendance prizes were given to Corey Dums, Casey Conner and Bill Rauen.
The meeting was adjourned.
DIY paper bead crafts
Kids and tweens are invited to stop by the Athens Branch Library during the week of July 28-Aug. 2 to make upcycled paper beads. After creating and decorating the paper beads, you can turn them into a bracelet or other craft. Younger children may need assistance from a caregiver. Drop by anytime during open hours.
