The Plum Creek Foundation recently awarded a $1,000 grant to the Westboro Public Library to help enhance the technology available at Masterpieces, their after-school program, which meets every Tuesday at 4 p.m. According to Julie Scott, town clerk and treasurer of the Westboro Public Library Board, the program includes a weekly art session for elementary aged children.

The Medford Area Fire Department has taken over the fire inspection service for the City of Medford and the seven townships in the department’s fire district. During 1997, 11 members of the fire department enrolled in the state fire inspection course. Upon completion of the course and passing the state certification test for fire inspectors, all 11 members are now state certified inspectors.

February 1, 1973

Paul R. Buehler, town of Medford was elected president of the Taylor county chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons at its annual meeting held here Sunday, Jan. 14, at the Jaycee clubhouse. He succeeds Mrs. Bernard Hirsch, Medford, who was named vice president. Andrew Pohnlein, Medford, who had served as vice president, was elected second vice president, succeeding Mrs. Grant Pope, rural Dorchester.

January 29, 1948

The Hutter Construction company of Fond du Lac, builder of the Taylor County court house in 1913, has been awarded the contract for the repair of the courthouse as its low bid of $28,439.00 was accepted by the building and grounds committee at a meeting Friday morning. The only other bid entered was from Thomsen- Abbot Construction company of Marshfield and was for $31,696.00. Through a letter, the Paulson Construction company of Medford informed the committee that a bid was not being entered due to the fact that material prices were too unstable at this time.

100 YEARS AGO February 1, 1923

The Medford Cooperative Creamery Co. almost reached the million and a half pounds mark in its 1922 butter production figures. The exact amount made was 1,439,751 pounds. Over four million pounds of cream were delivered to the institution during 1922. The value of the butter made was $549,384.49. The amount paid to patrons for butterfat was $511,925.36. Of this amount $483,484.38 was in cash, a little over $16,000 in butter used by patrons, and $11,622.07 applied on stock subscriptions to patrons’ credit.

125 YEARS AGO

January 29, 1898

The branch store of the M. Marcus Mercantile Co. is opened up and ready to meet the requirements of the people and already is doing business on a large scale. Being situated in the north store room in the opera house, it occupies the best business location in Rib Lake, for the reason that it is in the center of the village.
