High turnout


While Taylor County voters overwhelmingly favored Republican over Democrat candidates by a nearly two to one margin, at the state level, the results were mixed with Gov. Tony Evers.
Challenger Tim Michels conceded the race on election night.
Evers had 51.1% of the vote statewide to Michel’s 47.9%. Locally, voters favored Michels with a vote of 6,323 to Evers 2,262. There were 8,742 votes cast in Taylor County on Tuesday, this is up about 9% from the number of votes cast in the 2018 gubernatorial race.
In local races, Sheriff Larry Woebbeking received 7,803 votes to win reelection and Jill Scheithauer had 7,889 votes to become the next Clerk of Courts for the county.
In the 87th Assembly District county local voters favored Rep. James Edming 6,586 to Elizabeth Riley’s 2,062.
In the race for the open 29th State Senate seat, county voters favored Cory Tomczyk 6,618 to Bob Look’s 2,022. This margin carried through the district as Tomczyk won with 62.5% of the vote to Look’s 37.5% of the vote.
In the U.S. Senate race, local voters favor Sen. Ron Johnsons by 6,407 to Mandela Barnes 2,130. As of press time Wednesday morning, the race has not been officially called although Johnson See ELECTION on page 20 had a lead by about 32,000 votes. Election results remain unofficial until certified by the board of canvassers in each voting district.
In the House of Representatives, local voters favored Rep. Tom Tiffany 6,555 votes to Richard Ausman’s 2,109 votes a margin that carried through across the sprawling 7th congressional district with Tiffany wining 61.9% to 38.1%.
In other statewide races, Attorney General Josh Kaul was the leader statewide as of press time about 30,000 votes ahead of challenger Eric Toney. He leads in that race 50.5% to 49.5%. Among local voters, the margin was tipped heavily in Toney’s favor with county voters favoring him 6,177 to 2,460.
For Secretary of State, incumbent Doug LaFollette leads statewide 48.2% to Amy Loudenbeck with 48.1% of votes cast, less that 2,000 votes separate the candidates. That race has not been called as of press time. On the local level, again, the margin heavily in favor of the Republican challenger with Loudenbeck receiving 6,150 votes to LaFollette’s 2,190 votes.
For State Treasurer, at the state level John Leiber is leading Aaron Richardson 49.8% to 48% with about 45,000 votes separating the two candidates. Locally, Leiber received 6,137 votes to Richardson’s 2,097 votes.
Referendums
Three towns had referendum questions on the ballots.
In Maplehurst voters approved making the town clerk an appointed position by a vote of 119 to 28.
In Hammel, voters approved making the town clerk and treasurer appointed positions by a vote of 213 to 150.
In Roosevelt, voters approved making the town clerk and treasurer appointed positions by a vote of 81 to 73.

The holiday craft sale season had a soggy start last weekend with shoppers braving the rain and wind to check out sales held at the Taylor County Fairgrounds and elsewhere in the community.
