A U.S. Postal Service proposal to close five mail processing centers in Wisconsin could have a “potentially catastrophic” impact on rural central Wisconsin weekly newspapers, according to publisher Carol O’Leary.

O’Leary said tentative plans to close a Rothschild mail sorting center would mean that the eight newspapers and three shoppers printed at Abbotsford would get mailed to Green Bay before they are sent to central Wisconsin post offices and carried to homes and businesses. She said delivery of the newspaper, which now typically enjoys one-day service, might get delayed to a three-day service.

Judge Michael Hoover formally launched his election campaign for a six-year term this week for the soon to be vacant seat on the Court of Appeals, District III. The district is geographically the largest in the state encompassing 35 counties, including northcentral and northern Wisconsin. The open seat is a result of the announced retirement of the Honorable Daniel J. LaRocque, who has served as an Appellate Court judge for the last 13 years.

Making their home in Rib Lake are Mr. and Mrs. James W. Gebauer, who were united in marriage there Saturday, November 27 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Rev. Richard Girt C.P.P.S. performed the noon ceremony. The bride former Joan Ellen Niggemann, is the daughter of Mrs. Emily Niggemann, town of Westboro, and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gebauer of Rib Lake.

75 YEARS AGO

November 21, 1946

A new organization of women came into existence at Medford Saturday afternoon at a meeting held in the auditorium of the Taylor county normal school. Mrs. W.C. Miller, Mrs. E. W. Watson, and Mrs. Arthur J. Latton, former members of the Woman’s Alliance, an organization active here years ago, were responsible in getting the new club organized. It will be known as the Medford Women’s Club, and will engage in literary, social, and civic activities.

100 YEARS AGO

December 8, 1921

Wisconsin celebrates fifty years of Dairy Progress on dates of January 30th to February 4th. The above are the dates of the annual Farmers’ Course to be held this year as usual at the College of Agriculture during mid-winter. Plan on taking it in. Fitting tribute is to be paid this year to the memory of the late Gov. W. D. Hoard at this time. The Hoard Memorial paid for by popular subscription by friends of the dairy industry is to be dedicated at this time.

125 YEARS AGO

November 28, 1896

The Mellen Lodge of the Modern Woodmen of America gave a social dance at the Town Hall on Thanksgiving evening. An elaborate turkey supper was served at the Commercial Hotel. Quite a large crowd was present and it was a great success, both socially and financially. A. B. Evans has rented the saloon formerly occupied by the late Philip Beaulne. The place has been entirely remodeled.
