The mechanics of running a municipal pool are at the same time relatively simple and bewilderingly complex. The simple part is what people can see. Essentially, the city pool is a large concrete-lined hole in the ground sloping gradually from about 3 feet deep to more than 9.5 feet deep. A valve near the edge of the pool is used to fill it each spring, pumping in the 230,000 gallons of water in about 24 hours. Underneath the concrete deck between the pool and the pump building, there is a splash tank, which stores the overflow of water when there are a lot of users in the pool and makes sure the pool level stays constant.

A very large black bear called at the farm of Anton Galistel, about ten miles east of the city, last Wednesday evening, and made a decidedly bold attempt to carry off a yearling heifer. The animal was pasturing in the outskirts of the clearing when the bear bounced upon it. The noise of the encounter reached the ears of Mr. Galistel, who proceeded to the scene armed with his rifle. When he arrived the bear had much the best of the argument, and one shot from the rifle failed to divert his bearship’s attention from the coveted supply of meat. Another shot was fired with better results, as Mr. Bruin started for the woods as rapidly as possible. The heifer was badly shook up, and the farmer does not expect it will survive the terrible ordeal for any length of time.
