After 35 years of constant use things are liable to break down. In the case of the Medford electric utility’s south substation a breakdown at 2:20 a.m. on March 12 prompted the city to look at long-term replacement of switchgear at the facility at a cost of $614,000. According to Roy Mattson, city electric utility manager, the switchgear is located in a grey metal building at the substation located along Whelen Street in downtown Medford. The structure dates from 1977 but some of the parts inside are even older as parts from 1974 were used to replace parts which had previously broken.

First of all, the process is complicated by the fact that the state legislature has not passed the state funding budget on to the Governor yet for his okay. Until that happens, school officials must operate on their “best guess” and almost anything could theoretically happen with state funding.
