First graders have been very busy getting ready for second grade. They are enthusiastic readers, writers, mathematicians and scientists. Some fun end-of-year activities have included floating our homemade boats, Camp Read A Lot and popcorn tasting. After reading about how boats are made, the first graders made boats from recycled materials (top left and middle). We used our speaking and listening skills to share how the boats were made and finally we floated them. We were surprised to find out how well cardboard can float!

During Camp Read A Lot, we wrote about whether we would prefer to go camping in a tent or camper and measured with marshmallows (below, 2nd from right). We then spent time in the afternoon reading in classroom tents with flashlights and eating s’mores snack mix (bottom right).

Popcorn tasting was delicious! We tasted four different kinds of popcorn and made a graph to see which one was our favorite (above right). Cheddar was the winner! We also wrote about our favorite first grade activities because we are ready to “pop out” of first grade!

Our first-grade readers and writers have also been working hard to improve their skills by reading about the world around us. They have learned about things we see in the sky, inventors and inventions, and how sounds are made. These super readers have been practicing their reading skills by reading with partners, playing games and working in small groups with their teachers. First graders have been writing about their opinions about spring (below left) and writing about the life cycle of a butterfly. These young mathematicians have been growing their math minds by answering comparison questions and exploring 2D and 3D shapes (below, 2nd from left). Getting ready for second grade has been hard work, but also fun!

Watch out second grade … here we come!
