He was born on October 18, 1938, to John and Anna (Meinen) Schmidt in Tilden. He grew up farming with his family in Bloomer. In 1956, at the age of 17, he joined the Navy. He loved to tell stories about his adventures steering the air craft carrier, The USS Boxer, in the Pacific Ocean. He served from 1956-62. On a blind date in 1962 he met the love of his life, his Baby Doll, Ruth Ladwig. They then married on May 5, 1962. After the Navy, he first went to work at Case, building tractors. Then he worked at American Motor, building cars. Soon his love for farming returned, so in 1970 he moved to Dorchester with his growing family and purchased his first farm. Roger farmed with his family by his side for 27 years. After that in 1997, he sold the farm and moved to Tennessee. He then started his career at Walmart and worked there for over 20 years. During those years he moved back to Wisconsin, at the urging of his daughters and wife, to spend more time together. He loved living in his “Bird’s Nest” with Ruth on Clear Lake. In his spare time he enjoyed, fishing, maintaining his vehicles, growing flowers, bowling, playing Sheepshead and sitting around the kitchen table with his family and friends. Roger said hello to everyone that was fortunate enough to cross his path. He loves the Lord with his whole heart and shared his love with his family every time they got together.
