Visitation will take place at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The honor of pallbearer belongs to Briona Stewart, Brandon Karlen, Darin Karlen, Jada Lang, Nathan Karlen and Lauren Karlen.
Craig was born on April 5, 1970, in Wausau, to Gerald and Gloria (Freese) Karlen, and was a graduate of Edgar High School.
Craig was a kind, caring and deeply family-oriented man whose heart was always open to those he loved. He was the person family members turned to for help, guidance or a listening ear—and whenever he was needed, Craig would drop everything to be there. His generosity, loyalty and steady presence were hallmarks of his life. Craig now rests peacefully in his heavenly home, reunited with his grandparents, aunts and uncles who preceded him in death.
Family meant everything to Craig. He never missed a holiday, birthday, annual fish fry or a simple evening out for wings and beer. He was especially cherished by his nieces and nephews, who relied on him as their trusted “go-to” uncle for honest advice and thoughtful perspective. Craig shared a truly special bond with his entire family, one that can best be described as unwavering and full of love.
Craig took great pride in his home and property, maintaining them with meticulous care. His backyard became a sanctuary for wildlife, reflecting his deep love of nature. Birds would perch on his hand as he sat on his deck, while deer and rabbits peacefully shared his yard. He made sure his wildlife companions were always well cared for, never far from their next meal.
An avid outdoorsman, Craig had a lifelong passion for hunting and fishing. Each year, he spent a cherished week at Lake of the Woods with a close-knit group of friends he considered brothers. He also looked forward to his annual fishing trip with his special friend, Leanne, where friendly competition over who caught the biggest fish was tradition—one Leanne usually won. In the winter months, Craig could be found ice fishing with family and friends, enjoying good company, a few beers, and often bringing home a fresh catch.
Bowhunting held a special place in Craig’s heart, and he spent countless hours in the woods enjoying the peace of nature. This past fall, he proudly harvested a beautiful 8-point buck. Since the age of 13, Craig also carried on a treasured family tradition of deer hunting in Price County with his dad, brother and nephews—a bond that remained close to his heart throughout his life.
Craig enjoyed being part of pool teams, where he formed many lasting friendships. It was through these connections that he earned the nickname “Big Dog,” a name he wore with pride and one that became synonymous with who he was. He was also a lifelong member of the Central Wisconsin Conservation Club, dedicating countless volunteer hours to club projects and activities, including deer and bear hunts for individuals with disabilities.
Craig’s legacy will live on through the many lives touched by his gift of organ donation. His love, kindness and the deep connections he shared with family and his wide circle of friends will never be forgotten. Until we meet again, Craig—you will forever remain in our hearts and minds. May you rest in peace, surrounded by God’s comfort and love.
Those who will cherish his memory include his parents, Gerald and Gloria Karlen; his brother, Scott (Korie) Karlen; his sister, Amy (Rich) Lang, all of Edgar; his nieces and nephews and godchildren: Briona (Jeff) Stewart, Brandon (Sadie) Karlen, Darin Karlen, Jada Lang, Nathan (Haylie) Karlen and Lauren Karlen; his great-nieces: Wrenley, Lakyn and Nora; his significant other, Leanne Rogge of Chippewa Falls; along with many uncles, aunts, cousins and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Clarence and Loretta Karlen; his maternal grandparents, Alfred and Ruth Freese; his uncle, Kenneth Freese; and his aunts: Sherry Freese, Jane Freese and Yvonne Beard.
If desired, memorials may be given in Craig’s name to a charity to be determined at a later date.
