Randall William Mayer
1946-2026
Randall William Mayer, 80, of Stetsonville, lived a life filled with family, friendship, hard work, laughter, and more than a few good stories. While his passing on Oct. 4, 2026 was unexpected, the love and memories he left behind will remain in the hearts of his family forever. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was born on Jan. 23, 1946 to William and Arlyle (Brost) Mayer in Medford, the eldest of 11 children and the best big brother a gaggle of siblings could ask for. Randy graduated from Ladysmith High School in 1964. He advanced his education in telephone technology and worked on the West coast for two years, after which he returned to Green Bay, for a position with Appleton Bell. An opportunity arose with Midway Telephone Company in Medford, where he spent the next 18 years. He then took a position at Tombstone Pizza as the teledata coordinator and enjoyed many years there until his retirement in 2004. He enjoyed anything he could do to make his Stetsonville community a better place; he served as Village President, was a longtime member of the Volunteer Fire Department, and was instrumental in developing the recycling program. He was also an active member of the Chelsea Conservation Club and a founding member of Henchman’s Hideout.
Family and friends were the heart of his life and he loved having a full social calendar including his longstanding Thursday night Hunter’s Dinners and monthly lunches with Ladysmith High School friends. He loved a great game of cribbage at the farm, a perfectly mixed gimlet, and a good laugh with the people who meant the most to him. He also spent many spring days at the Czerniak farm helping with their maple syrup production. His only request for payment was a little syrup and a few dozen farm-fresh eggs.
He married Margaret Mary Hauser in July 1964 in Stetsonville, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They welcomed their daughter Sarah Jo in 1970 and their son Nicholas Andrew in 1977.
As a father, he was patient, kind, and loving. He shared his value of generosity with his children, providing abundant support to them and to anyone in need. He was delighted to be a “Yampa,” loved his grandchildren dearly, enjoyed spending time with them and often boasted about their many accomplishments.
Randy is survived by his wife, Margaret (Hauser) Mayer, his daughter Sarah Jo Mayer (Steven), his son Nicholas Andrew Mayer (Sheila); and 5 grandchildren, Morgan, Aaron, Haddyn, Kolvin, and Grettyn. He is also survived by his sister in law, Alice (Michael, deceased), Leon (Margaret), Patricia (Norbert), Mary-Beth (David), Mark (Karenna), Paul (Jan), Stephen (Eunice), Rodney (Patty), Barbara (Steve), Suzie (Hauser) Soos (James Sr, deceased), Kathy (Bill) Brunner, Patty Hauser (Don, deceased) as well as his Aunt Joan (Mayer) Tlusty (Jim) and Uncle Allen Brost (Joanne). He is survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Arlyle Mayer; his sister, Margaret Mary; and his brother, Michael.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Stetsonville Centennial Hall. We hope you will join us to honor Randy with your stories of his friendship.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Taylor County Food Pantry, Chelsea Conservation Club or Habitat for Humanity.
