Philip Irwin Engel

Philip Irwin Engel, age 92, of Wausau, passed away on Sept. 12, 2026, at Mount View Care Center in Wausau. Philip was born on Nov. 5, 1933, in Pardeeville, to Rev. Alfons J. Engel and Laura (Pottratz) Engel. He was baptized as a child of God on Nov. 19, 1933, and was confirmed in his faith May 25, 1947. He received his education in Pardeeville and Medford before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy, stationed aboard the USS Vogelgesang (DD-862) as a Fireman.

On June 12, 1965, Philip married Shirley Pierce at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Medford, with his father, Rev. A.J. Engel, officiating.

Early in his career, Phil worked for Frischman Motors in Medford for 14 years. In 1964, he moved to Wausau and began a 31-year career with Wausau Homes, retiring in 1996. While working at Wausau Homes, he also spent five years as a caretaker for the Lincoln Square Condominiums. Phil concluded his career as a substitute custodian with the Wausau School District.

Phil enjoyed curling, hunting, fishing, woodworking, traveling, cheering on the Packers, and spending time at the family place near Perkinstown. He appreciated a good meal shared with friends and family, his black coffee extra hot, and, perhaps most of all, the opportunity to good-naturedly razz just about anyone who crossed his path.

Philip is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Lorrie (Jon) Schneck, of Greendale; son, Allen Engel (Angie), of Madison; granddaughters, Emilie and Allie Schneck; brother, Rev. John (Norma) Engel, of Cross Roads, Texas; sisters, Rhoda Engel, of Waupaca, and Mary (Ron) Schnose, of Prescott, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Charlene Engel, of New London; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. A.J. Engel and Laura Engel; and his brothers, Rev. Nathan Engel and David Engel.

There are no scheduled services, but please hold Philip in your thoughts, and reminisce about the good times whenever you cross paths with others who cared about him.

Philip will be laid to rest at Perkinstown Community Cemetery in Perkinstown, at a later date.
