Bernard “Bernie” Lelko, 75, of Gilman, died suddenly at home from natural causes on April 28, 2026. Born March 17, 1951, in Chicago, he was the son of the late Ferdinand “Fritz” and Sophie (Gonia) Lelko. Bernie grew up in Chicago’s Old Irving Park neighborhood, attended St. Wenceslaus School, and graduated from Gordon Tech High School in 1969.

A proud member of IBEW Local Union 134, Bernie completed his apprenticeship in 1975 and worked as a union journeyman electrician until retiring in 2002. He deeply valued the brotherhood and friendships he built along the way.

Bernie loved the open road, often traveling the

country on his Harley with his dog, Roach. He lived and worked throughout the West, including time in Alaska on the Trans Alaska Pipeline, before settling in Gilman. He enjoyed rock and roll, hot rods, and cheering on the Chicago Bears.

Known for his kindness and warm personality, Bernie was always the life of the party. He had a generous heart, an easy laugh, and a gift for making everyone feel welcome.

As Bernie put it, “…It’s been a good one. Got to see some good times! Go Bears!!!”

He is survived by his brother, Leonard “Lenny” Lelko, of Wausau; sister-in-law, Marie (Jerry) Lelko, of Whitmore Lake, Mich.; nieces and nephews, Sheila (Brad) Frome, Brenda (Kevin Spradling) Lelko, Dan (Mary) Lelko, and Laura Lelko; great-nieces and greatnephews; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Jerome “Jerry” Lelko.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Gilman area at a later date.
