Marie M. Weiland, 99, Spencer, was welcomed into the loving arms of her Lord while surrounded by her children on Monday, May 29, 2023, at Colby Senior Care under the care of Compassus Hospice.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Spencer. The Rev. D. Joseph Redfern officiated. Burial followed in West Spencer Cemetery in the town of Sherman, Clark County. Family and friends were invited to gather on Wednesday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. The honor of pallbearers belonged to Marie’s grandchildren, Eric and Erin Strey, Christopher Weiland, Tadd Hohlfelder, Kevin and Kerry Kaiser, Daniel Weiland and Thomas LaClaire.

Marie was born March 4, 1924, in Spencer, the daughter of Anton and Agnes (Joswiak) Loss. She attended Harding public grade school in the town of Brighton and graduated from Unity High School. Marie was united in marriage to Emil Weiland on June 10, 1941, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Spencer. They shared 63 years of marriage together until his death in 2004.

The couple raised five children and farmed in rural Spencer for 33 years. After moving to Spencer, she served as secretary for the Spencer Senior Citizens Group. Marie worked seasonally at Figi’s upon retirement from farming. She was a devoted member of Christ the King Catholic Church and enjoyed singing in the church choir, was a member of the PCCW and served two terms as president for the PCCW. She was also an election poll worker for many years.

Her hobbies included playing cards, gardening, sewing, embroidery, crocheting and cross stitching. Marie enjoyed traveling, especially her trip to the Holy Land in 1987, and to our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. One of her favorite pasttimes was spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Marie is survived by her children, Charles (Kathy) Weiland of Spencer, Sarah (Jeffery) Eibergen of Chili and Genevieve (Dennis) Hohlfelder of Eau Claire; her daughter-in-law, Lynn Weiland of Eagle River; a sister, Adeline Fait of Mosinee; and two sisters-in-law: Lorraine Weiland of Colby and Elnora Landwher of Colby. Marie is further survived by 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 37 great-great-grandchildren, and special friends, Maggie Newmeyer and Lyn O’Shasky.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Agnes; her husband, Emil Weiland; son, Ronald Weiland; daughter, Shirley Kaiser; granddaughter, Jolie Nisbet; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Marie Kaiser; brothers, John and James Loss; sisters, Irene Fellenz and Victoria Groff; and sister-in-law, Arlene Weiland.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Colby Senior Care for their loving compassion and dedicated care they provided to Marie in the two years of her stay.
