A longtime Medford resident, passed away in the early morning hours on Friday, Sept. 16, 2022, at Rib Lake Health Services. She was 83 years old. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Medford with Rev. Ralph C. Shorey III officiating. She will be laid to rest in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather on Saturday at the church from 9 a.m. until time of services. The honor of pallbearer belongs to: Don and Ashton Behling, Chase Reichert, James and Deacon Carlson and Nathaniel Swenson. Honorary pallbearers are her granddaughters and great-grandchildren.

Janice was born on Oct. 6, 1938, in rural Curtiss, Wis.; the daughter of Alex and Clara (Theilig) Winkel. She attended Woodland Grade School in Curtiss and graduated from Owen-Withee High School. She went on to attend Medford Teacher’s College and worked for Medford Schools for 13 years. She was also employed at Phillips Plastic in Medford for 27 years.

She was united in marriage to Henry Dassow on July 12, 1958, at Zion Lutheran Church in Colby. Sadly, Henry passed away on Jan. 16, 2012.

Janice was a previous member of Green Grove Lutheran Church in rural Colby as well as Zion Lutheran Church in Colby before becoming a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Medford.

With gifted and patient hands, Janice sewed and needlepointed beautiful pieces for her family and friends. Other hobbies included reading, playing cards and spending time with her family and friends.

Those who will cherish her memory include her daughter, Darla Dassow of Robbinsdale, Minn. and her son, Lorin (Florene) Dassow of Medford; her grandchildren, Nathaniel (Anne) Swenson, Rebecca Swenson, Elizabeth Swenson, Jodi (Don) Behling and Kristy (James) Carlson; and her great-grandchildren, Kiarah Behling, Ashton Behling, Chase Reichert, Deacon Carlson, Caden Carlson, Evan Swenson and Sophie Swenson. She is further survived by her siblings, Mardell (Dick) Longsdorf and Darrell Winkel along with many other relatives and friends.

Janice was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Dassow; her parents, Alex and Clara Winkel; her sister, Carol Winkel, a sister-in-law, Marie Winkle and her parents-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are being accepted in Janice’s name to be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church in Medford.
