Foundation balance gets huge boost from $10,000

By Ginna Young The Holcombe Area Veterans Memorial fund with the Community Foundation of Chippewa County, is $10,000 richer, as a donation recently came in from an anonymous donor, as reported at a meeting, June 4. The money was given from someone who was at the St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser, who then requested more information and subsequently made the large donation.

“My jaw hit the table,” said memorial chairman Jim Matacyznski.

Donations are always needed and appreciated, as the building of the site continues. For example, the border between the legacy stones and driveway is one of the next projects to tackle.

“We don’t have water, so we can’t have sod,” said Mataczynski.

Instead, there will be decorative rock laid, but the color still has to be chosen. The rock will also go around the flag poles.

“It’s going to be good,” said Mataczynski.

They’ve also decided to hire someone to install the new electronic sign, that will be purchased by going half with the Town of Lake. That way, the project is sure to be done correctly and professionally; now, the memorial is just looking for a company to do so.

However, they are still in limbo for some of the excavating project, as they are waiting on the land transfer that was promised to them by David Staudacher.

“I don’t see any other way, but waiting until we get the paperwork that says it’s ours,” said Mataczynski.

Mataczysnki also mentioned that 27 additional legacy stones will be laid down, Saturday, July 5, in a dedication ceremony. The stones will later be set in cement.

The public is welcome to attend, as well as buy a legacy stone, and they do not have to be a veteran to purchase one – it could be in honor of anyone – a business, organization or even a pet. “As long as it’s appropriate in the wordage,” said Mataczynski.

He also wants to clear up any misinformation that may float around the community. Mataczynski requests that people, approach him or come to a meeting, if they want to clear something up.

“When you want the facts, you got to get a hold of us, don’t believe the rumors,” he said.
