NOTICE City of Cornell Minutes of Common Council Meeting Jan. 16, 2020 7 p.m. mayor Judy Talbot called the regular council meeting to order at the city council chambers. The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence honoring all individuals who have, or are, protecting our freedom. Minutes taken by Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer DeJongh. Council members present: Floyd Hickethier, Terry Smith, Steve Turany, Ashley Carothers and Mark Larson. Absent: Aimee Korger Guests present: Julia Wolf, Bill Kvapil and Tyrel Sikora.

Motion Hickethier, seconded Carothers, to accept the agenda as printed. Carried 5 ayes, 1 absent.

Motion Carothers, seconded Larson, to approve the regular council meeting minutes of Jan. 2, 2020, with the spelling of Schoonover changed. Carried 5 ayes, 1 absent.

Council reviewed letter from Jessalyn Gettler requesting 15 minute parking in front of daycare business at 110 Main Street, to accommodate safety concerns with pick up and drop off of children. Concern was directed to the Public Health and Safety Committee.

Bill Kvapil inquired if the mayor/city council would send a letter of support to the county, designating portions of county highways as ATV routes, to allow access to the city from the south.

Mayor and council members present agreed to send a letter to Chippewa County officials supporting the designation of portions of CTH K, and or CTH EE, as ATV routes to allow access to the City of Cornell from the south.

Motion Turany, seconded Hickethier, to reduce the city’s property insurance premium by $1,653, by increasing the deductible from $1,000 to $5,000. In reviewing claims, the city has not had a payable claim with the Municipal Property Insurance Company since joining it in 2016. Carried 5 ayes, 1 absent.

Motion Hickethier, seconded Larson, to approve Mayor Talbot’s appointment of John Ouellette to non-UDC building inspector effective immediately. Carried 5 ayes, 1 absent.

DeJongh reported that Mark E. Larson and Tyrel Donald Sikora filed nomination papers for mayor. Bill Kvapil, Terry Smith, Stephen J. Turany and Mark E. Larson filed nomination papers for alderperson.

DeJongh reported that HS Fence Company has completed putting up the new fence and backstop at the softball field. The Twins Community Fund has been updated.

DeJongh reported that federal law has been changed raising the legal age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21.

Motion Larson, seconded Carothers, to approve bills totaling $309,611.28. Roll call vote carried 5 ayes, Korger absent.

Council received statement from police chief Brian Hurt that the parttime police secretary position was offered to Tracy Roper-Beachem.

Mayor Talbot reported that she had written a successful technology grant through the Chippewa County Foundation, for equipment to furnish the visitor center. Forthcoming events:

• Gun show is set for Feb. 22 and 23, 2020, at the high school. Spirit Club will do the concessions.

• Candlelight Cross-Country Ski and Sledding Event, at Brunet Island, is scheduled for Feb. 15, 2020.

• Vintage Snowmobile Races at East Bay Jan. 25 and 26.

• Jessica Oleson-Bue, Chippewa County Housing Authority executive director, will be at next meeting to discuss updating the city’s housing contract.
