We got some senses…. What about hyper-senses?

We got some senses…. What about hyper-senses? We got some senses…. What about hyper-senses?

Demo and Tubby are a lively bunch this morning. I guess this is the time when they are the most awake and wild here at the office. Deciding to come in early this morning proved that to be the case. My office area is dark with only a single light on next to me and the dim light coming from the window. The outside is still dark-ish, cloudy and rainy. My headphones are in and I’m listening to some binaural beats that are tuned to 110Hz on the left and 40Hz on the right. Gamma Inducer is what who ever made this is calling it; for peak mental focus and performance.

I feel something to the right of me but I’m not hearing anything as the headphones are on noise-canceling mode, as to get peak focus and performance. Giving my peripheral a check, I jump a little. Seeing Demo standing on my desk behind and just to the right of me, his body bolt straight looking at me (or just beyond me), with just a little flick of his tail and intense eyes. Once we made the small eye contact he sat down in his tracks. It’s like once he knew I was aware of him he could relax. Visibly seeing the little feline relax gives me the grace and reassurance that, in fact animals do tend to respond well to my energy. Calming but yet playful, comfortable even. To be honest he seemed to be looking past me… into what? I have no idea. At least he seems at ease now.

How well are you at taking your surroundings in? Or maybe with one of your senses taken away? How well are you communicating with little small body gestures or even reading body language? These questions and others alike usually roll around in my head and make their appearance every so often, well whenever the thought truly wants to roll its way back into my focus.

While I was in university, a couple of my favorite classes where abnormal, behavioral, cognitive and social psychology. Studying people and how they behave or conceptualize their world has always been an intrigue for me. And in what different states can one be in, in the context of the feeling of normalcy even though the individual is stuck in a state of fight or flight. Like the inner tickings of the different systems in our body as well, i.e. what happens to our nervous system when our hair starts to stand on its end, or a chill going down one’s spine, or while you can feel an entity or something surrounding you, behind you, etc. Stuff like that.

How well are we to gage our surroundings when we mostly rely on our sight, or sound… and even within those categories, how well is your sight? Are you able to hear the hum of the electricity running all around you? When something is amiss with a smell are you able to recognize it? What if you weren’t born with vocal cords, so you couldn’t make any sounds.

I watched a great documentary recently called Pangolin Kulu’s Story on Netflix. I know it’s a little abrupt in my segway but Pangolin’s cannot make any sounds. They were born without the ability to, however their sense of smell is incredible, their eyesight is very poor, but their hearing is extraordinary. Another little fun fact, the pangolin has been around for around 80 million years. Not so fun fact is that sadly the pangolin is the most trafficked mammal in the world.

Try and have some fun the next couple of days and feel your surroundings. Try to rely on your other senses, rather than sight or vocal sound. Be a pangolin for a little while.
