The Colby/Abby swim team picked up a key Great Northern Conference dual meet victory last Thursday when they traveled to Ladysmith to take on the Ladysmith Trident co-op squad, defeating their conference foes 93-71.
Last season, the Ladysmith co-op narrowly edged out Colby/Abby in both their head-to-head dual and at the conference meet, leading to a fourth place GNC finish behind Rhinelander, Medford and Ladysmith. Getting a victory over the opposing co-op in their first conference dual of the season would be key to the Colby/Abby squad improving their standing in 2024.
The visiting squad won eight of the 11 events and their ability to field two relay teams in the 200-yard medley and the 200yard freestyle opposed to just one Ladysmith relay in both events allowed them to take home the victory.
Brezlyn Boyer and Madisyn Schraufnagel won all four events that they were a part of at Thursday’s meet. Boyer grabbed the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.77 seconds and also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time 1:22.44 while Schraufnagel picked up individual victories in the 200-yard IM and the 100yard butterfly, posting times of 2:23.22 and 1:07.26 in the two events respectively.
The pair teamed up with Chloe Cihlar and Jordan Jakel to secure a win for Colby/ Abby in the 200-yard medley relay putting up times of 2:02.51 and then won with Jakel and Bryleigh Boyer in 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:54.36. The third place relays of Ella Baumann, Sage Lueth, McKinley Meyer and Bryleigh Boyer in the 200-yard medley and Meyer, Lueth, Kate Sheahan and Hazel Flink in the 200-yard freestyle were also key by earning the team a six-point advantage in both events. They finished with times of 2:23.12 and 2:14.18 in their respective events.
Cihlar earned wins in the shortest and longest events of the afternoon by posting a time of 26.71 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and then following it up with a 6:11.44 performance in the 500-yard freestyle.
Jakel and Baumann picked up individual second place finishes for Colby/Abby in the 100-yard butterfly and the 50-yard freestyle respectively. Jakel posted a time of 1:09.28 in her event while Baumann’s second place finish came with a time of 30.37 seconds. Sheahan also had an individual second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 1:25.27 in one of the closest races of the evening, finishing nine-tenths of a second off the pace of Ladysmith’s Lyra Moffitt.
The 400-yard freestyle relay of Cihlar, Sheahan, Baumann and Jakel also had a tight race in the final event of the night. They grabbed second with a time of 4:25.80.
Picking up individual third place finishes were Bryleigh Boyer in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:50.74, Baumann in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:09.47, Meyer in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:30.72 and Lueth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:27.83.
The co-op’s next conference dual will be at home on Thursday, Sept. 12 when they take on Lakeland. Colby/Abby defeated the Thunderbirds on the road last season, 95-63, though Lakeland looks to be a program on the rise after fielding a team of just two swimmers two seasons ago. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
