Abby field events carry team in Auburndale

The Falcons track team traveled to Auburndale last Friday to compete against twelve other schools. Both Abbotsford teams found themselves solidly in the center of the pack after all was said and done, with the girls finishing with 73.5 points and a sixth place spot and the boys coming out with 46.5 points and seventh position.

The field events were the strong point for both squads on Friday, with 14 of their 22 individual events that scored coming from such competitions.

Senior Marcus Bohl took home the sole victory for the Falcons in Auburndale. He paced the field in the discus, his furthest throw measuring 155 feet, 11 inches. This was not only 27 feet further than the next closest athlete, but also beat out his old personal best by nearly 10 feet.

But Bohl wasn’t the only Abbotsford athlete to find success in the discus. Three girls also placed in the top-five in their competition. Sommer Brodhagen narrowly missed out on triple digits, reaching a distance of 99 feet, 10 inches with her best throw of the evening, which was good enough for second place. Teammates Margo Pogodzinski and Isabella Aguilera nabbed fourth and fifth place respectively, recording throws of 93 feet and 88 feet, nine inches.

Pogodzinski and Aguilera also scored in the shot put, with the former taking fourth place with a throw of 31 feet, two inches and the latter following up with a sixth place finish after tossing 28 feet, 10.75 inches. Bohl also scored for the Falcons in the shot put, taking fifth in the boys division with a throw of 41 feet, three inches.

Chloe Cihlar added a second place finish in the triple jump, where her longest attempt measured 31 feet, seven-and-a-half inches. Sydney Falteisek also scored in the event, taking fifth with a distance of 30 feet, nine inches.

Calley Ruesch and Christian Fuentes both captured fourth place finishes in the long jump in their respective divisions. Ruesch’s longest leap measured 14 feet, five inches and Fuentes recorded a distance of 18 feet, five inches.

Two Falcons pole vaulters scored for their teams in Friday’s competition. Warren Flink finished third for the boys’ team, reaching a height of 10 feet even to claim the spot. Meanwhile, Tamika Heck finished sixth in the girls’ division with a height of seven feet.

Chase Boller rounded out the scorers for the Falcons’ field events. The freshman took fifth in the high jump, finishing with a final height of five feet, eight inches.

While a majority of Abbotsford’s success came off the track, they also found themselves with some top finishes on the track as well. Azul Diaz came away with two scoring performances in Auburndale, taking fourth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:12.18 and fifth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 13:51.92. Reese Molitor also provided a scoring boost to the Falcons’ efforts by taking seventh in the 1600-meter run, putting up a time of 7:10.86.

Brodhagen and Cihlar both placed fifth in their respective sprint events. Brodhagen put up a time of 13.80 in the 100-meter dash and Cihlar had a time of 28.59 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

Fuentes provided the short distance speed for the boys’ team, taking fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.91. Meanwhile, Jack Schindler added two fifth place finishes in the 1600-meter run and the 3200-meter run, finishing in 5:12.50 and 11:40.53 in the two events.

The Falcons’ three scoring relays all took fourth place, with the girls’ 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relays of Brodhagen, Cihlar, Falteisek and Celia Schindler putting up a times of 54.47 seconds and 1:54.29 and the 4x100-relay of Boller, Fuentes, AJ Brodhagen and Emilio Escalera recording a time of 47.08 seconds.

Abbotsford’s next meet will be in Stanley-Boyd on Friday, May 5. The start time for the competition is slated for 4:15 p.m.
