The Holy Rosary facility was damaged during the Christmas break when a pipe leaked above the gymnasium office and equipment room and flooded the wooden floor of the gymnasium of the parochial school. “No one was here because it was the break and the water gushed into the office and warped the floor and did all the bad things water does to a nice gym floor,” Holy Rosary principal Tim Havican said.

It has been 17 years since the new Taylor County Jail was added to the Courthouse, but a state study projects that the inmate population here will increase dramatically over the next dozen years. As a result, County officials are considering a major expansion project probably within the next three or four years. According to Sheriff Bill Breneman, the present jail can hold 38 prisoners, while the state projects the inmate population in Taylor County will be 105 by the year 2010.

January 4, 1973

Under the sponsorship of four Medford area churches, a TV special, “Faith in Action,” will be televised Saturday on three channels in this viewing area. The launch of the telecast of what has been named “Key 73,” begins a continent-wide movement of most Christian denominations to bring the message of Christ to all persons in North America this year. Program times are 12 noon, channel 13, 4:30, channel 12; 5, channel 7. Sponsoring churches are Trinity Lutheran, Community United Church of Christ, United Methodist and St. Paul’s Lutheran.

75 YEARS AGO

January 1, 1948

Sam That, who has the sewer contract for the city, stated Tuesday afternoon that the brick work on the new pump house would be completed by Wednesday afternoon and that the roof of the building would be completed immediately after the first of the year. The brick work was done by Tony Koncel. The motor controls for the pumps have not arrived as yet, and this is the only material needed to give sewer service to all of the lines installed during the summer. The contractor said that just as soon as the controls arrived he would have them installed.

100 YEARS AGO

January 4, 1923

Taylor County people have been running their cars more on long trips this winter than they have for some years. During the past couple of weeks cars have been driven to Milwaukee, Wausau, Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire, Minneapolis, and other cities where drivers would not have ventured at this time of an ordinary snowy winter. In some strips the roads are covered with snow and ice but the snow has come so gradually that the cars have kept the full road hammered smooth. Where the small holes are filled with ice the road is smooth as pavement.

125 YEARS AGO

January 1, 1898

The Hammel Music and Sewing Machine Co. moved their large stock of pianos, organs, sewing machines & c.. from the Paquet Opera block last Thursday to the room formerly occupied by John Carstens & Son’s grocery department on Front street. The change will prove for the best interests of the firm.
