Cornell tops Lake Holcombe in a conference showdown

It’s always a big game for the Cornell Chiefs and Lake Holcombe Chieftains volleyball programs when they meet, and the Oct. 3 match was no exception. Taking place on Cornell’s court, the conference clash started out a little slow for the visiting team.
The Chiefs claimed the first set, 25-9, but the Chieftains put up more points in the second set. Nonetheless, the set still went to Cornell, 25-11.
“Our team, overall, played great volleyball during our match vs. Lake Holcombe,” said Cornell coach Amy Lorenzen, “which is always a fun rival, especially because a lot of the ladies have relationships with girls on their team and some of them even play on the same club team.”
By the third match, the Chieftains were determined to make the Chiefs sweat it out, forcing the final score to 2523. Cornell came up with the 3-0 victory to improve their record, while Lake Holcombe added a loss to their scoring column.
The Chiefs’ serving was onpoint,” said Lorenzen. “There were a total of 23 aces and only 3 errors. In addition, our offense and defense were solid, all around.”
For Cornell, junior Brooke Anderson had 6 kills and 5 digs, with Schroeder adding 8 kills, 6 assists, and 6 digs and 10 aces. Sophomore Briana Glaus chipped in with 7 aces and 3 kills, while junior Brooke Sime notched 6 aces and 3 kills, and junior Makya Hetherington came up with 14 assists.
On Lake Holcombe’s side, senior Karly Kirkman had 4 kills and 11 digs, followed by sophomores Chloe Lee and Emmy Kirkman, with 3 assists each.
