Marathon’s varsity golf team won back-to-back WIAA Division 3 sectional championships on Tuesday at Golden Sands Golf Course in Cecil, which was hosted by Bonduel.

Red Raider golfers scored a teamlow 350, ahead of the second place Wabeno/Laona Rebels with 354. Host Bonduel placed third with 357, Wausau Newman was fourth with 359 and Wisconsin Rapids Assumption fifth with 360 among the 12 teams competing in the sectional golf meet.

Marathon seniors Noah Gage and Ben Robbins tied for fourth place with individual scores of 82 apiece at the sectional meet. Red Raiders senior John Stoffel and sophomore Dylan Dodson tied for 24th place with scores of 93 each. Marathon sophomore Alex Pawlowicz placed 39th with a score of 99 out of 69 individual golfers competing in the sectional.

Red Raiders head golf coach Luke Jacobson said his golfers did a great job being patient and keeping their focus throughout the 18 holes played on the Par 71 sectional golf course.

“It was a windy day and that made scoring conditions a little bit tougher,” he said. “The guys were able to recognize if they took a few bogies or bigger, that if they stayed patient with the round and did not get down on themselves, that we would be there in the end.

“Our experiences last year of playing in tough spring weather, and our experiences playing a tough conference schedule really carried us through. I am extremely proud of our team mindset and am glad they will get to experience the state tournament as a team.”

Marathon’s golf squad begins WIAA Division 3 state tournament play with a noon tee time this Monday, June 6, at Blackwolf Run Golf Course in Koehler which is near Sheboygan. The Red Raiders will also tee off at 7 a.m. this Tuesday, June 7, on the state tournament golf course.
