It’s time once again to get spooky, for the annual Spooky Stacker Stomp in Cornell, a 5K fun run/walk that raises money for local projects. This year’s run takes place Saturday, Oct. 1, beginning at Mill Yard Park, where participants are transported to the Brunet Island State Park boat landing, then make their way back to the finish line at the Mill Yard.

“You don’t have to come in costume,” said coordinator Ginna Young, “but why wouldn’t you? We love seeing the little goblins and ghouls – and big ones, too.”

Humans aren’t the only ones who can get in on the action, as dogs are welcome to come along for the run...in costume... and compete in the doggie dash before the big race. Hosted by the Cornell Area Betterment Association (CABA) and sponsored by area businesses/organizations/individuals, the event raises money that is earmarked for certain projects, such as helping add to funds for improvements. This time around, the funds will go toward updating things at the Mill Yard pavilion.

“We (CABA) have already freshened up the pavilion, with a coat of new paint by the bathrooms and kitchen, which made us realize there are more things we can do,” said Young. “Seeing the bright, clean paint next to the worn doors, made us on the Stacker Stomp Committee want to replace the exterior bathroom doors and maybe the kitchen door, as well.”

Events for the day begin at 9 a.m., with registration, followed by the doggie dash and a kids dash, with prizes awarded to the first across the finish line, prior to the 5K non-timed race. Top finishers for adult male and female, and youth male and female, will receive a medal and certificate, while those chosen for Best Costume in those categories receive pumpkin patch passes.

There will also be basket raffles and a chance for candy apples, if you spot a Halloween-themed rock hidden along the race route.

“The changing fall trees should be beautiful for that weekend,” said Young. “We live in the most amazing place for outdoor recreation and want to share it with everyone, so bring a friend or two.”
