Miltrim Farms in Athens will host a COVID vaccination clinic from noon until 3 p.m. this Saturday, Jan. 29. The dairy farm is located at 1715 Townline Road.

Anyone from the public is invited to show up at Miltrim Farms, with no appointment needed, to receive their first, second or booster COVID shots.

Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are available at the vaccination clinic.

Progress Athens

A community-wide Progress Athens meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Athens Community Hall. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting.

Progress Athens is an initiative to raise donations for the efforts to purchase and renovate the old US Bank building located on Alfred Street, complete long overdue updates to the Community Hall bathrooms and to enhance the existing municipal building space to provide opportunity to be further utilized.

Goals of the Feb. 9 meeting are to share more information about the project, such as layout ideas for both locations; report the account balance and field questions to hopefully spark additional support for this community initiative.

Progress Athens has received $141,773.77 in donations thus far toward its $250,000 goal.

Candlelight walk

The Athens Area Trail Association’s seventh annual Candlelight/Moonlight Walk will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, from 7-9 p.m.

People are welcome to walk, snowshoe or cross country ski the approximatley 2-1/2 miles of groomed candlelight trails at Erbach Park during this event.

Admission is free and preregistration is not required for people to attend this event. The public can also enjoy hot chocolate and hot dogs around a giant campfire at the Candlelight/ Moonlight Walk. Donations are greatly appreciated to aid in winter trail manintenance costs.

Athens Acres meets

The Athens Acres 4-H Club met on Jan. 17 in the Athens High School music room.

Pledges were said and roll call was taken with 37 members present. January birthdays were Lena Schug and Egan Bingham.

The secretary and treasurer reports were approved as read.

Before February’s meeting, the Cloverbuds will meet at 6:16 p.m. to pot plant cuttings for the fair.

Under old business, Athens Acres 4-H Club received a thank you note from Bridge Street Mission for the Christmas cookies club members decorated and donated to it.

New business was discussed. The club will plan a day for bingo at Athenian Living. The date and time will be sent out later. If any club member is interested in doing a demonstration at the meeting, they should notify Jenny Lipinski. This is a great way for club members to start working on their fair projects and gain confidence in public speaking.

After the February meeting, Athens Acres Club members will be writing letters to an elder in the community. Saturday, Feb. 26, is national letter to an elder day.

The club’s annual Easter Egg Hunt will occur on Saturday, April 16. The club will provide more details on this event at its next meeting.

The Ha-Ha Box winner was Adelyn Parkes. The club’s next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, in the Athens High School music room.

After the January meeting was adjourned, the club met in the Athens High School commons to create Valentines for military veterans. Club members were able to make 62 Valentines to send to area service men and women.

On campus

Three UW-Eau Claire students from Athens were awarded to dean’s list for the fall 2021 semester.

Kole Kaldunski and Jacob Stange, College of Business, and Bailey Harding, College of Education and Human Sciences, were each named to the college’s dean’s list.

Maleah Redmann of Athens was awarded to the UW-River Falls dean’s list for the fall 2021 semester.

To be named to the dean’s list, a full-time undergraduate must earn a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a scale of 4.0, or midway between a “A” and “B” average.

Catholic Schools

St. Anthony de Padua Catholic School in Athens will celebrate Catholic Schools Week this Sunday, Jan. 30 until Friday, Feb. 4.

Student activities for each day are as follows: Monday, Jan. 31: dress up classroom color day with roller skating at Melody Gardens, followed by a movie at Rogers Cinema in Marshfield; Tuesday, Feb. 1: dress for church and then change into flannel/farming wear, middle school essays read and board games from 1-2 p.m.; Wednesday, Feb. 2, crazy hair, socks, outfit and hat day and bowling; Thursday, Feb. 3: dress for success day and celebrating morning Mass at Wausau Newman with the bishop; Friday, Feb. 4: sport dressup day and Minute to Win it at 1 p.m.

Girls Scouts event

The Athens Girl Scouts will hold a fundraiser at Erbach Park in Athens on Friday, Feb. 4, from 4-7 p.m.

Athens Girl Scouts will serve brats, hot dogs, chili, chicken dumpling soup, hot cocoa and hot cider to be purchased. Funds raised willl be used for a community project in Athens.

COVID dashboard

Athens Public Schools reported 30 positive cases of COVID- 19 as of Jan. 17, out of 552 staff and students.

There are 16 students with positive COVID-19 cases in Athens middle/high school, eight students in Athens Elementary School, four school district staff members and two students in Maple Grove charter school.

All students and staff who tested positive for COVID-19 are in isolation at home.

Seventy-six staff and students have tested positive for COVID-19 since Aug. 31, 2021.

Senior Citizens

The Senior Citizens card group met on Jan. 20 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead was played. Pat Frank won the first game and Steve Klockziem took second place. Butch Boris won the second game and Andy Hoest placed second. Doc Weise received low score.

Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
