Marathon American Legion Post 469’s baseball team began this season with home and away doubleheader sweeps against the Abbotsford/Colby and Tomahawk American Legion squads.

Post 469 beat Abbotsford/Colby, 10-1, in the first game of its home doubleheader on June 19. Blake Underwood was the winning pitcher. True Thurs led Post 469 with a double and three RBIs. Owen Chrouser and Drew Woelfel collected two RBIs each. Quillan Kunkel and Grant Salber each doubled in the win.

Marathon defeated Abbotsford/Colby, 10-0, in the nightcap as the younger players got their turn to shine. Ean Shuda was the winning pitcher. Reed McCain led Post 469 with a double and three RBIs. Koltyn Stevens batted a perfect three for three at the plate while Kaleb Ohde and Taylor Underwood each hit two for three in the victory.

Post 469 edged Tomahawk, 8-7, in the first game of a road doubleheader on June 20. Quade Fuhrman was the winning pitcher. Woelfel batted two for four with four RBIs. Salber added a pair of RBIs. Evan DeBroux and Taylor Underwood each hit two for three in the win.

Marathon won the nightcap, 10-3, against Tomahawk. Taylor Underwood was the winning pitcher. Woelfel batted two for four with a double and two RBIs. Chrouser and Salber each collected two RBIs. Reed McCain hit two for three with a double. Blake McCain and Taylor Underwood both batted two for three in the victory.

Post 469 split a home doubleheader against Loyal on June 23. Marathon edged Loyal, 7-6, in the first game. Kunkel was the winning pitcher. Woelfel hit a perfect two for two with a double and two RBIs. DeBroux also had two RBIs. Thurs was two for two with a pair of doubles in the win.

Marathon lost to Loyal, 5-4, in the second game. Blake McCain was the losing pitcher. Brayson Schneider led Post 469 with two RBIs. Reed McCain batted two for two in the defeat.

Post 469 also split a road doubleheader against the D.C. Everest Junior Legion on Friday. Marathon won the first game, 100. Thurs earned the victory on the mound. DeBroux hit a perfect two for two with a pair of RBIs. Kunkel batted two for three while Woelfel, Chrouser and Reed Mc-Cain all hit two for four in the win.

Marathon lost the second game, 3-0, to the D.C. Everest Junior Legion. Kunkel was the losing pitcher. Taylor Underwood let Post 469 at the plate by hitting two for three in the defeat.

Post 469 swept a home doubleheader against Amherst on Monday. Marathon won the first game, 4-2. Blake Underwood was the winning pitcher. Shuda led Marathon in hitting by going two for four in the win.

Marathon easily won the second game, 12-0. Shuda was the winning pitcher. Jack Blume, Derek Sorge and Schneider collected two RBIs apiece. Ohde hit two for three in the victory.

Post 469 currently has an 8-2 record heading into its home doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 7, against the Stratford American Legion team. Post 469 is then scheduled to play home doubleheaders against Medford Junior Legion at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 10 and D.C. Everest Junior Legion on Friday, July 11.

Marathon is scheduled to play a home doubleheader against Medford Junior Legion at 6 p.m. on Monday July 14. Post 469 will play a road doubleheader against Abbotsford/ Colby at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 17. Post 469 will play a home doubleheader against Tomahawk Legion at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 18 before ending the regular season with a road doubleheader against Rib Lake at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 21.

The American Legion Region 2 Class A tournament is from July 25-29 and the Class A state tournament is from Aug. 1-4.

All-time hitting leaders

Brock Warren has the best batting average among Marathon American Legion baseball players with a minimum of 200 at-bats from 1999 through 2024 with a .399 average.

David Schreier is second on the all-time Post 469 best hitting average list with .385. The late Andy Kadunski is third with a .384 batting average, Landen Williamson is fourth with .383 and Ryan Gassner is fifth with .378.

All-time pitching leaders

Tyler Hamann has pitched the most innings with 257-2/3 among Marathon American Legion baseball players with a minimum of 100 innings from 1999 through 2024. Hamann also has the best pitching record at 30-12.

Schreier has the second-best pitching record at 26-10 followed by Gassner at 2613. Gassner has pitched the second-most innings with 251-2/3 and Schreier has the third-most innings with 204.

Cody Hanke has the fourth-best pitching record at 25-4 and innings at 189-1/3.
