What was supposed to be the first full weekend of Dairyland League baseball action in both the Large and Small divisions didn’t quite pan out as pesky rain and wet conditions prevented a few games from being completed.

Large Division

In the Large Division, the Whittlesey Reds evened their league record at 1-1 with a 6-5 home win over the Everest Merchants. The teams were supposed to also play Friday at Everest, but that game was postponed.

In Sunday’s win, Nick Retterath pitched 6.2 solid innings and Logan Baumgartern closed out the last 2.1 innings, though things did get interesting in the ninth thanks to a home run from Everest’s Taylor Lemanski.

Brandon Loertscher went two for three as did Zach Haynes. Spike Alexander was two for four and Baumgartner had a double in the win.

Everest fell to 2-2. On Friday, Minocqua traveled to Abbotsford and snuck out of town with a 2-1 win to improve to 2-1 in league play. The Wood Ducks and Marshfield Chaparrals sit in an early second-place tie in the standings behind 1-0 Wisconsin Rapids.

Also on Sunday, Merrill and Rhinelander split a doubleheader.

Rhinelander is at Whittlesey this Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. first pitch.

Small Division

In the opening weekend of Small Division play, the defending champion Rib Lake Osprey rolled to a 12-0 win at Tomahawk Saturday night.

In the only other game to officially be completed on Sunday, the Medford Moon Dogs led at Spirit 9-4 when rain halted the game. With five completed innings, it went into the books as an official game.

Tony was leading Westboro 4-1 through two innings when that game was suspended. The game has beeen rescheduled for Saturday, June 28 at 1:30 p.m. in Westboro. Pittsville at Interwald also was postponed.

This weekend’s games include Westboro at Rib Lake Friday at 7:30 p.m., Interwald at Medford and Spirit at Pittsville at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
