BLOOMER INVITATIONAL - Rib Lake boys 3rd and Gilman 6th at Bloomer; Vick wins girls high jump

Led by wins from Kaleb Scott and Jed Henderson, the Rib Lake boys finished third, one point behind Stanley-Boyd, and Gilman’s teams got wins from Max Ustianowski and Addison Vick during Thursday’s nine-team Bloomer Invitational.

In the boys meet, Durand-Arkansaw won comfortably with 126 points, while Rib Lake was right in the middle of a tight race for second, scoring 94 points. Cadott was right behind the Redmen with 91 points, Eau Claire Regis had 81 and the Gilman Pirates were sixth with 72.

Scott’s win came in the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 2:02.45 as he hit the finish line 0.31 seconds ahead of Bloomer’s Seth Rogge. Rib Lake’s Jack Regier placed third in 2:14.8 and Gilman’s Chad Konsella was seventh at 2:19.44.

Earlier in the meet, Scott took second in the 1,600-meter run at 4:41.08, Regier was fifth in 4:54.9 and Truman Smith was sixth at 5:08.37, making it a 15-point event for the Redmen. Durand-Arkansaw’s Zayne Richardson won in 4:37.27. Rib Lake’s distance crew added fourth- and fifth-place finishes from Jackson Schutt (11:18.15) and Connor Highfill (11:24.75) in the 3,200-meter run, a second-place time of 8:55.93 from Schutt, Connor Highfill, Seamus Highfill and Smith in the 3,200-meter relay and a second-place time of 3:43.61 from Scott, Regier, Smith and Seamus Highfill in the 1,600-meter relay. Cadott won both races in 8:55.41 and 3:40.09. Rib Lake’s team of Ian Weber, Isaiah Hubbard, Dene Zuleger and Kylan Bartelt added five points with a fourthplace time of 4:21.17 in the 1,600-meter race.

Henderson won another high jump competition for the Redmen, clearing the bar at 6 feet. He was 2 inches higher than his Marawood North rival Chase Boller of Abbotsford. Gilman got a fourth-place height of 5-4 from Trevor Vick and a seventh place jump of 5-2 from Ustianowski.

Ustianowski was the top hurdler in the boys meet, winning both races in seasonbest times for Gilman. The senior won the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.21 seconds, 1.71 seconds ahead of Stanley-Boyd’s Jesse Allard, and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 46.5 seconds, 1.12 seconds ahead of Allard. Rib Lake got scoring contributions from Kylan Bartelt (20.95), who was seventh in the highs, and Gavin Zondlo (51.03) and Henderson (52.34), who were fourth and seventh in the intermediates.

Konsella, a state qualifier last spring, hit his best mark of this spring in the long jump competition, getting out to 19-3.75, good for second place behind Durand-Arkansaw’s Jaxson Weiss (19-10.5). Sawyer Winger was fourth at 18-10.75 and Vick was seventh at 17-4, giving the Pirates 15 points in the event. Vick also took second in the triple jump at 39-7.5, 8.5 inches behind Weiss. Mitchell Moran added a sixth-place jump of 30-10.75 for Gilman.

Konsella added a third-place time of 55.05 seconds in the 400-meter dash, while Pirate Brady McAlpine got the eighth-place point at 56.28 seconds. Konsella was 0.39 seconds behind winner Sawyer Webster of Eau Claire Regis.

Gilman’s Taydyn Angell entered both throws for the first time this spring and scored in both. He was sixth in the discus with a season-best throw of 113-8 and eighth in the shot put with a seasonopening mark of 35-3, just ahead of Rib Lake’s Lawson Carlson (31-5.75).

Gilman’s team of Angell, James Wojcik, Wyatt Orth and Logan Halida was third in the 400-meter relay at 51.6 seconds, while Rib Lake’s David Pichea, Rylan Schaelzka-Lenz, Riley Johnson and Gus Zuleger took fourth at 52.64 seconds. They trailed Thorp (47.6) and Abbotsford (48.78). That same Rib Lake team was third in the 800meter relay at 1:50.19, trailing Durand-Arkansaw (1:41.18) and Stanley-Boyd (1:46.2).

Abbotsford (42), Bloomer (36) and Thorp (17) rounded out the boys team scoring.

Girls results

In the girls meet, the high jump was the event that took center stage locally as Gilman’s Addison Vick and Rib Lake’s Maddie Rademacher along with Addison Auth of Durand-Arkansaw all hit 4-10 to lead the pack. Vick got the win without any misses until she attempted 5 feet. Rademacher got second in the tiebreaking process. Rib Lake’s Hadassah Nelson got two seventh-place points by clearing 4-6, tying her season-best.

Gilman senior Jaylen Copenhaver had a productive meet, scoring 20 points in four different events. Her top finish was second place in the triple jump at 32-2, a distance that put her 11 inches behind Bloomer’s Sophie Strand. Vick was fourth at 30-11. Copenhaver was fourth in the long jump at 15-9, 8.5 inches behind winner Iszy Sonnentag of Cadott. Claire Drier of Gilman (14-7.75), Rademacher (14-7.25) and Vick (14-7) were just outside scoring range in ninth through 11th places.

Copenhaver placed fifth in the 100meter dash in 13.5 seconds and Pirate Patricia Kloss was ninth in 14.11 seconds. Both times were season bests. Copenhaver was sixth in the 200-meter dash at 27.83, while Drier (28.57) and Kloss (29.0) were eighth and ninth, all season bests.

Drier scored 12 points in the hurdles, led by a second-place and season-best time of 50.02 seconds in the 300-meter race. She was 0.15 seconds behind Stanley-Boyd’s Lula Chwala. Rib Lake’s Emma Tlusty got Drier by 0.1 seconds in the 100meter high hurdles to place fourth and she was seventh in the 300 at 57.84. The high hurdle time was a season best for the Rib Lake junior.

Vick scored once more for Gilman, taking fourth in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.42. Rib Lake’s Ella Grzanna was 10th at 1:17.19. Pirate Rilla Syryczuk scored three points with a sixth-place finish in the shot put. Her best throw went 29-0.75. She also took 13th in the discus (69-10).

Gilman’s Kennedy Buske, Shae Drier, Brynn Komanec and Ava Webster took third in the 400-meter relay in 56.34 seconds, while Rib Lake’s Roxy Goberville-Lopez, Avie Schutt, Nelson and Rademacher were sixth at 1:00.32. Stanley-Boyd (52.66) and Cadott (53.23) were the top two teams. Maria Bisco, Schutt, Lucia Nevarez and Tlusty were fourth in the 800-meter relay at 2:10.94. Abbotsford won the race in 1:54.87.

Stanley-Boyd won the team championship with 127.333 points, while Cadott snuck by Bloomer 97.333-93.5 for second. Eau Claire Regis was fourth with 77 points, Abbotsford and Durand-Arkansaw tied for fifth with 70, Gilman was seventh with 61 points, Rib Lake scored 25 and Thorp was ninth with 8.833.
