WBCA ALL-STAR GAME

For the fifth summer in a row, Medford’s boys basketball program is sending a representative to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 2 All-Star Game.

This year, Charlie Gierl has been chosen to play in the game, set for Thursday, June 26 at about 2:30 p.m. at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

Gierl, the 2024-25 Great Northern Conference Co-Player of the Year was announced in late April as a member of the Black team, whose head coach is Todd Pyszora of Delavan-Darien.

Also a WBCA Division 2 All-State honorable mention choice this winter, Gierl ranked second in GNC scoring at 15.5 points per game. Gierl played in 11 GNC contests and ranked sixth in the league with 6.4 rebounds per game, second in free throw percentage at 83.9% (26 of 31) and third with 2.5 made 3-pointers per game.

Overall in 22 games played, Gierl averaged 16.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. He shot 47.9% from the field, including 40.3% from 3-point range.

Gierl follows Tanner Hraby in 2024, Logan Baumgartner in 2023, Joey Sullivan in 2022 and Peyton Kuhn in 2021 as recent All-Stars from Medford. Head coach Ryan Brown also was a Division 2 head caoch in the 2021 event and had assistant Bob Komanec on his staff.

According to the WBCA release, the Black All-Star team includes first-team All-State selection Dahir Abdullahi of Greenfield as well as honorable mentionees Zach Orr of Rice Lake, Carson Bauer of West Bend West, Owen Krepline of Brillion, Mason Stieber-Pinter of Greenfield and Carter Sullivan of Stoughton.

Rounding out the roster are Preston Johnson of River Falls, Ben Forbes of McFarland, Jose Gonzales of Martin Luther, Jake Hansen of Wauwatosa West and Logan Laine of South Milwaukee.

The assistant coaches are Mason DeNoyer of Winnebago Lutheran and Evan Hibbs of Delavan-Darien.

Mike Hintz of Fort Atkinson is the White team’s head coach. His squad includes Mr. Basketball finalist Amari Allen of Ashwaubenon and first-team All-Staters David Boldon of Nicolet and Anthony Rise of Brookfield Central.

Players and coaches chosen for the game will raise funds for several organizations, including Camp Hometown Heroes, Camp Wawbeek/Easter Seals of Wisconsin, Garding Against Cancer, the MACC Fund and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Wisconsin.
