Hornet golfers open at Black River, Pine Valley

The Colby golf team is now three meets into their season. After starting the year with a Cloverbelt East mini-meet at Black River Golf Club in Medford, the team also competed in larger competitions held at the Bloomer Memorial Golf Course and Pine Valley Golf Course in Marathon.
Marathon Invitational
The Colby squad took ninth out of as many teams at the Marathon Invitational held at Pine Valley on Monday. The Hornets finished with a final combined score of 418 points. Tomahawk narrowly took the top spot with a score of 333, just ahead of Marathonâs 338 and Mosineeâs 338.
Marathonâs Blake Kraft and Abram Jacobson took the two top individual spots, finishing with scores of 78 and 79 on the 18-hole course respectively.
Gavin Voss had the best day for the Hornets, tying with Mosineeâs Casey Polega for 38th place. He finished with a score of 98. Teammate Braidon Johnson was not far behind, tying with Derrick Lato of Stanley-Boyd for 42nd by finishing the course in 100 strokes exactly.
Brody Viegut and Jacob Hoppe finished with similar scores as well, with Viegut posting a score of 109 to take 48th while Hoppe tied with Stanley-Boydâs Ryan Starck for 50th with 111 strokes. Landon Steinman rounded out the varsity squad with a 54th place finish and a score of 118.
Bloomer Invitational
Last Friday, the Hornets competed in their largest competition of the season, going up against teams from 24 different schools. They took 19th overall, ending the day with a team score of 402. Prescott won the team competition, finishing with a score of 306, while Chetek-Weyerhaeuser took second with a score of 311 and the hosting Bloomer squad took third with a score of 322.
Colby found themselves between Fall Creek, who took 18th with a score of 398, and Barron, who finished with a final team score of 403.
Prescottâs Tyler Reiter had an impressive day on the course, taking home the individual title. His final score of 69 put him two strokes ahead of runner-up Ryker Meskers from Chetek-Weyerhaeuser.

for 50th with Jacob Rubenzer of Mc-Donell-Regis and Wyatt Olson of Somerset with a score of 92.
Voss was second on the team, tying for 69th place with four other athletes by posting a score of 96. Hoppe tied for 84th with a score of 102, Johnson finished with a score of 112 to tie for 108th and Steinman placed 116th with a score of 124.
Cloverbelt Mini-Meet #1
In their opening meet of the season on April 22, the team took second in a ninehole contest against three other Cloverbelt-East squads. Their final combined team score of 210 put them behind Neillsvilleâs 196 but ahead of Columbus Catholic, who finished with 228, and Owen-Withee, who ended the day with 231.
Voss, Viegut and Johnson all finished within three strokes of each other, putting them right in the mix of the top performers of the day. While Neillsvilleâs Tucker Johnson distanced himself from the rest of the field with a score of 35, the second through eighth place golfers all finished fairly close to one another.
Voss had the Hornets top score, tying with Neillsvilleâs Colton Hannasch and Cody Hart for fourth place with a score of 48. Viegut was right behind him in seventh with a score of 49 and Johnson grabbed another top-10 finish for Colby by taking eighth after finishing the course in 51 strokes.
Steinman grabbed 14th in the competition with a score of 62. Hoppe did not finish the course.
