June 5, 2014 Pool project on course
A massive renovation and expansion of the city of Medford’s pool facilities is rapidly nearing completion.
Crews from Neuman Pools have been busy installing equipment and putting the final touches on the pool project in anticipation of turning it over to the city in two weeks. Just as the contractors are finishing up the last details on the $850,000 project, Medford aldermen were also dealing with last minute pool concerns at Tuesday’s city council meeting, including setting a free swim day on the 4th of July, purchase of new lifeguard chairs to meet current codes, and the installation of a new pool rules sign.
25 Years Ago June 2, 1999 Drug tests for athletes could begin next fall
Random drug testing of high school athletes may become a reality next year, if a proposed policy is approved at the School Board meeting in June. It will apply to all high school students who participate in athletic programs.
According to District Administrator Paul Schoenberger, the policy is, “in part, a response to existing concern by some coaches about suspected drug or alcohol use by student athletes on their teams.”
50 Years Ago June 6, 1974 June Dairy Days Program To Honor Dairy Farmers
The dairy industry, the leading contributor to the area’s economy, will be feted this weekend during June dairy days sponsored by the Medford area Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Taylor County Association of Cooperatives.
Highlighting the weekend will be a farm-city banquet honoring dairy farmers Saturday night in the M-room at Medford senior high school. Punch will be served from 7:30 o’clock until dinner at 8 o’clock. Serving on the committee are Ronald Decker, Hugo DeJong and Tom Koszarek.
75 Years Ago June 9, 1949 Frank Diesing Buys Medford Marble Works
A business deal, which has been pending for several weeks, was consummated last week when Frank Diesing purchased the Medford Marble & Granite Works business and the home of Mrs. Joe Metzler on Whelen Ave.
The business was started by Frank Bary, and 21 years ago he sold to Metzler and A.P. Weiske. The partnership continued for a year and Weiske then sold his interest to Metzler. Since the later’s death the business has been operated by Mrs. Metzler.
100 Years Ago June 5, 1924 Zagorski Store Burns at Lublin With Loss Of Close to $23,000
The Zagorski store at Lublin was destroyed by fire Saturday evening about six o’clock. The roof caught fire, it is thought from a spark from the kitchen stove chimney or from a spark from a Soo Line train. The loss is about $23,000 with $10,000 insurance.
The store was operated by M.J. Zagorski Sr. and M.J. Zagorski Jr. The younger Zagorski is the village of Lublin’s member on the Taylor county board of supervisors.

June 3, 1899
The new county law-makers met for the first time Wednesday morning, May 31st, at 10 o’clock and by a unanimous vote re-elected E. L. Urquhart chairman. This fact reflects credit upon the members of the board and shows their good judgement. The outcome is gratifying to all.
