Sharing lessons learned on and off the ice

Olympic gold medalist Tyler George spoke to students and community members in Medford on May 10.
George, a member of USA’s 2018 gold medal winning Olympic curling team, spoke to students about his journey to win the Olympic gold and the lessons this brings in life. His message was to never be afraid to fail and for them to put the best effort into anything they do.
George also spoke with community members during an event held at the Medford Curling Club that evening. The event recognized former Medford curling coach Bev Schroeder who had a lasting impact not only on the sport in Medford, but also on the national and international level through her time with working with the United States Curling Association.
She was part of the US Jr. teams that participated in 13 World Junior Championships as either a team leader or coach. In 1999, she received the national coach of the year award, selected by the National Woman’s Sports Foundation. She closed her coaching career as the head coach of the High Performance Junior Woman’s team and led them to back-to-back national championships. Schroeder’s passion was her affiliation with Junior Curling and helping young curlers develop both as athletes and adults.
Schroeder died in 2018 after a battle with cancer. The Medford Curling Club unveiled a display of Schroeder’s curling memorabilia.
In addition to George, community members impacted by Schroeder also spoke sharing stories of her leadership in the sport and her impact on their lives as people. Dale Schroeder, Bev’s husband, and her son, Troy, also spoke, sharing stories of Bev’s work both on and off the ice.
