The Stratford Journal 50 years ago... thursday, May 15, 1974 Delegates Named to Badger Boys State Zach Hilgemann and Greg Leick have been selected to represent Stratford at Badger Boys State this summer. Zach is the son of the Anthony Helgemann’s and Greg is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Leick.

The boys are sponsored by the Stratford American Legion and the Stratford Lion’s Club. Baton corps Members of the Star Spangled Stratfordettes baton corps have been selling candy in the Stratford area to help raise money to buy new costumes.

The baton corps meets every Monday at the grade school gym for one hour rehearsals.

25 years ago... wednesday, May 12, 1999 Frodl to fill vacancy on board Don Frodl, formerly a Stratford Village Board trustee, has been asked to fill a vacancy on the village board. He will step into a seat left open by President Greg Leick following last April’s election. Safety patrol Wendy Guralski, eighth grade student at St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Stratford, took a trip to Washington D.C. with many other students from the area. The Safety Patrol students were chosen for the bus trip for their responsibility as a safety patrol member. Guralski was most impressed by the Ford’s Theater. The Marathon Journal 50 years ago... thursday, May 9, 1974 Commencement to be held Friday The 1974 commencement at Marathon High School wil be held on Friday, May 17. The graduating class consists of 85 graduates with 20 being classified as honor students.

Scott Stieber will be the master of ceremonies. Thomas Buttke and Constance Boehm will both give speeches.

The Record-Review 50 years ago... thursday, May16, 1974 69 to graduate at EHS Cathy Adamski and Judy Heil have been named valedictorian and salutatorian respectively, at Edgar High School this year.

Sixty-nine seniors will be graduated in commencement exercises on Wednesday, May 22. Rev. Francis Zimmerer will give the invocation and benediction and the senior choir will provide the musical selection.

WIAA regionals are at Edgar Tuesday On Tuesday, May 21, Edgar will be hosting the 1974 WIAA Regional Track and Field Meet. The meet will consist of 11 boys schools competing for the Class C championship and 15 girls teams competing for the Class B championship. An estimated field of over 600 boys and girls will take part. Plans nearly complete for 70th Athens Fair The program for the 70th annual Athens Fair will be held August 15-18. Rainbow Valley Rides will be on the midway and the rest of the program will nearly be the same except for some changes in names.

To date, $182 has been donated to the barn building fund and if enough is contributed the barn may still be built this summer. 25 years ago... wednesday, May 19, 1999 Natzke named president The Athens Board of Eduction elected Duane Natzke as board president at last week’s regular monthly meeting. Natzke succeeds board member Pat Ostrowski as board president. Marathon sewer charges This year, it will cost the Village of Marathon $166,000 to operate its sewage plant. Next year, following a $2.2 million update, it will cost the village about double this amount to run the plant.

Last week, the Marathon Utility Board approved new sewer rates that, when put in place, will just about double the sewer bill of typical Marathon homeowners.

Athenian award

The Community-School-Connection group presented Athens High School teacher Pat Kelley with the first annual Athenian award at its monthly meeting in the Alpha Center at Athens High School. Kelley was selected based on his participation in various civic and service organizations, community leadership and efforts in education.

1999 - Newly ordained

Reverend Robert Thorn, OFM Capuchin, conducted his first Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marathon on Sundy in front of a large congregation. Thorn becomes a priest following many years as a missionary in various countries, including Panama, Ireland and Thailand. Reverend Thorn is pictured with his mother prior to a reception at the church.
