So, we did a thing…

It all happened so fast. One minute I was on the golf course, the next I was holding a puppy. And yet the next minute, we were coming home with one.

It all started as an innocent round of golf for my brother’s birthday. We finished our round and went to the clubhouse where one of my softball friends was having a lunch date with his foster puppy.. I held the puppy and I was sold. I had always grown up with dogs but it had never been on our radar to get a dog as we have three cats and live in the middle of Marshfield.

There I was, holding the puppy and staring into its cute little eyes. It was at that moment, I made it my life’s mission to convince Kaitlyn we needed a little extra chaos in our lives. I sent her the foster puppy’s information and got a bunch of pictures and videos of the dog. I got to the point where I was able to convince Kaitlyn that this might actually be a good idea. We set up a time to visit the puppy, however, we found out that a family had just filled out paperwork to adopt the dog.

I was heartbroken. OK, that might be a little dramatic but I was definitely sad. I quickly got over the puppy as I had only spent 10 minutes with the animal. It wasn’t soon after Kaitlyn was the one who was sending me puppies she had found for sale or up for adoption. We chatted with a friend who said we wouldn’t have wanted the foster dog anyway as it was an Australian Shepherd/Blue Heeler mix and said that dog would have been a handful to have in town. She suggested we get a more docile dog like a Golden Retriever. So what did I do?

I scoured various local humane societies and shelter websites in search of a Golden Retriever. After not quite finding the mix of age, gender and looks we were looking for, I thought a simple Google search for a Golden Retriever might yield better results. I ended up at Puppies. com and no sooner did I look, I found a few dogs that were perfectly matching what we were looking for.

Before you get upset that we ended up going with a bred puppy instead of an adopted dog, I need to plug that two of our cats are from the animal shelter.

We traveled about an hour away from our home in search of the perfect puppy. Once we visited the two pups that were left, it was just a matter of whether we were taking home one or two dogs.

When we arrived, we saw the two puppies playing with their mother in the yard. We ended up buying an amber-colored retriever and named him Hudson. We had a small amount of money saved up from what my dad had given us out of my grandpa’s estate when he passed in 2022. My dad gave us this money with one stipulation: we had to spend it on something that we would use for years to come to help remember grandpa. Initially, we thought we would spend it on a riding lawnmower. We were very close to buying one a week prior to getting Hudson. Instead, we held off on the mower and spent the money on a friend we will have for years to come.
