The Stratford Journal 50 years ago... thursday, March 28, 1974 Elections Are Contested There are four candidates for the three positions on the Stratford village board. The incumbents are Charles Ponczoch and Arthur Weber; the two other candidates are Alan Grass and William Schroepfer.

There are three candidates for the two open positions on the school board. Two are incumbents, Mel Guenther and Gilbert Leick. The other candidate is Paul Hale, who narrowly lost to Frank Zygarlicke in the election two years ago. Pool Tournament Sunday afternoon a pool tournament was held at the Sportsmen’s Bar in Stratford. Winners were Jim Weichelt and Don Clement, first; Jim Glenn and Ben Zaleski, second; Don Sinokton and Ken Brandt, third; and Ken Hanneman and Roy Hanneman, fourth. Mike Kubiaczyk was the tournament referee. 25 years ago... wednesday, March 31, 1999 Stratford Forensics Qualifying for the state forensics competition in play acting are Megan Rasmussen, David Schulta, Abby Bohman, Mary Raleigh and Sara Knoll. The five students performed a play entitled “The Silver Tongued Slicker of Sassafrass Flat.”

Erin Roggenbauer and Nicole Niggemann both qualified for the state forensic competition in poetry. The Marathon Journal 50 years ago... thursday, March 28, 1974 Quiet Election Expected Traditionally, Marathon has a fine record of lots of interest in their elections, but that does not seem to be true this year. In neither the election for the school board member, or in the election of the three village board members is there competition on the ballot. Avowed candidates for the village board are: Charles Jansen, Myron Karlen and Kenneth Weisenberger. For the sole position on the school board is Robert Menzner.

Only incumbents are trying for trustee posts in Athens. They are Arno Behrend, Marvin Ewan and Walter Engebrecht.

Seven are vying for three seats on the Edgar Village Board. Incumbents DuWayne Untiedt, Rennie Lindner and Jon Schroeder are opposed by Edward Krause, Myron Niewony, MarvinWulk and Tom Sommers. Edgar Board of Education incumbents Ronald Reiche and Albert Totzke are opposed by Alan Schwantes 25 years ago... wednesday, March 24, 1999 Hamburg smokehouse is destroyed A smokehouse burned up Monday at a Town of Hamburg residence causing miscellaneus damage. Lor True told authorities that a groundlevel fire used to smoke two butchered hogs got out of control, damaging an $800 10 by 12 foot wooden shed, freezers worth $80, 500 lbs. of shelled corn, a $100 water pump and a $500 Chevrolet van. The hogs were lost in the fire. Illegal shootings The DNR is seeking information to prosecute whoever shot and killed two tundra swans recently at Three Lakes Marsh in the Town of Hull. The carcasses were skinned to determine cause of death. 200 Wins Edgar High School varsity football coach Jerry Sinz was one of two high school football coaches honored for reaching 200 career wins at the 23rd annual Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Clinic in Madison on March 27.

Sinz was also recognized as the 1998 Region 1 Coach of the Year. Football coach for 24 years, Sinz has led the Edgar Wildcats to Marawood Conference football chamionships 14 times and participated in 12 WIAA playoffs.

1999 - Patriotic Artist

The Stratford Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Memorial Post 6352 recently sponsored the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest at the local level. The contest was open to 9-12th grades. Julie Karl, an 11th grader at the Stratford High School, is the local winner. She was given a monetary award and a certificate. Her entry went on to the Department level in Milwaukee. 1974 - So what’s spring?

A little girl and a big shovel attempted to remove the “taste of spring” covering the ground Monday morning. The little girl is Carla Hoffman, three-yearold daughter of Chet and Irene Hoffman, Marathon. Unseasonably cold weather and snow flurries, o mrather blizzards, have been plaguing Marathon County since the first day of spring last week.
