thens Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on Feb. 29 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead were played. Alvira Henrichs won first place and Rick Schaetzl came in second in the first game. Dave Perrodin won first and Pat Frank came in second in the second game. Low score went to Sally Stubbe.

Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

College notes

Haley Reed has graduated with honors from UW-La Crosse with a bachelor’s degree in accountancy.

Athens Book Club

On Tuesday, March 12, at 2 p.m., the Athens Book Club will gather to discuss “Black Cake” by Charmaine Wilkerson. In the novel, a mother’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for two siblings: a traditional Caribbean black cake and a voice recording. Call 715257-7292 for more information.

Board game night

All ages are welcome at a monthly board game night at MCPL Ath-ens, 203 Alfred St. Games will be available to choose from, and participants are welcome to bring in their own games to play. Alumni Award

Nomination forms are currently being accepted for the Distinguished Athens Alumni Award. This award is given to one to six people each spring who have graduated from the Athens High School, alive or given posthumously, who are an inspirational role model for students and have a legacy to community pride. Nomination forms are available at the Athens High School office or can be found online at athens1.org. The deadline is March 22 for this year’s awards ceremony.

Zackary Seitz has earned president’s list honors for the fall 2023 semester at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn. To be eligible for the president’s list, students must earn a grade-point average of 4.0 for the semester and be enrolled in at least 12 credits of coursework.

The following students were named to the dean’s list at UW-Milwaukee for the fall 2023 semester: Sydney Busche, nursing; Isaac Thompson, energy and computer science.

Joe Kloos, a mechanical engineering major at UW-Platteville, was named to the fall 2023 dean’s list. To be named to the list, students must earn a grade-point average of at least 3.50. Kloos also received chancellor’s honors for the semester.

Young Adult Book Club

Join the Stratford Branch’s new book club intended for young adults and teens aged 15 and older.
