From past files of The Star News 10 Years Ago March 6, 2014 Gilman suffers double whammy

The Gilman community suffered a double shock last week with the announcement of the closing of the Gilman Care Center, which is the village’s third largest employer and the location many area families have used the past 40 years to care for loved ones. The care center is currently home to 23 residents and the workplace for 35 employees.

The word of the closing was announced to families, effected employees and village of Gilman officials on Friday, Feb. 28 when a press release was sent out The press release said the 36-bed skilled care facility would close in the near future with the loss of 35 jobs and relocation of 23 residents.

March 3, 1999 Neumueller, Crass bring home state title 25 Years Ago The 1999, wrestling season came to a head on Friday evening as Medford’s Matt Neumueller, Jake Crass, and Casey Goessl took a shot at the WIAA state title.

Earlier on Friday, Mike Lissner had secured a third place state finish.

When the dust cleared on Friday, both Crass and Neumueller were left standing and Goessl was a state runner up.

50 Years Ago March 7, 1974 Sno’bile Derby Rescheduled for Sunday

The sixth annual Medford-Whittlesey Snowmobile Derby has been rescheduled for Sunday, the event postponed last Sunday because of dense fog and high temperatures. The committee is hoping for snow and cooler weather in order to recondition the oval track on the derby grounds located north of Medford on highway 13 to the junction with county trunk M then a short distance west.

March 3, 1949 Record Attendance at REA Annual Meet 75 Years Ago

The largest crowd to ever attend an annual meeting of the Taylor County Electric Cooperative was present Saturday and filled the Medford high school gym to overflowing. It is estimated that at the peak there were more than 1,000 persons in the gym and that at no time was there less than 800 persons attending the session.

100 Years Ago February 28, 1924 Veneer Fire Stopped With But $100 Damage

Fire at the plant of the Medford Veneer Co. was stopped Tuesday evening with but $100 damage.

Manager E.I. Ross believes the fire started possibly from a spark caused by friction and blown up into the fan on the drier. It occurred during the showing of the pageant “Wisconsin” at Germania Hall; the fire department men left the hall at once to respond to the call.

Josiah and Serena Heil of Medford announce the birth of a daughter, Airiella Skye Heil, born Feb. 22 at Aspirus Birthing Center - Medford. She weighed, 7 lbs., 7 oz and was 21 inches long. Grandparents are Mike and Becky Newlon of Johnstown, Ohio and Steve and Ann Heil of Medford along with Bonus Grandparents Bob and Lori Lee of Medford. Great-grandparents are Dale and Marge Hendren of Centerburg, Ohio.

Gavin Louis Krautkramer

Ryan and Molly Krautkramer of Stevens Point announce the birth of a son, Gavin Louis on January 19 at 8:03 a.m. at Aspirus Women’s Health Birthing Center at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He weighed 7 lbs. 2 oz. and was 20.5 inches long.
