Place your hand upon your heart. Do you feel that beating muscle under your flesh? It’s rhythmic and a big part of your emotional self. Do you notice when your emotions change, your heartbeat either gets slower or faster. What makes your heart speed up? The excitement and anticipation of seeing someone who makes your soul shine, or maybe when you see the tail wag of your furry best friend. Could a piece of music pick up your heart rate? What about when the opposite happens and you hear devastating news, does it quicken or does your heart feel like it drops and slows down? Or how about when the whole of your body feels heavy. Is it a slower heart beat?

Being aware of what affects the rhythm of your heartbeat is very important and can assist you to find what types of activities, or things that stress you out. So many people try to shove emotions off to the side as if they are something not to be dealt with at that moment. I know I have in the past and unfortunately I still sometimes do. Swallow the negative emotions, pain and hurt and move on. But is that very healthy? Nope!

Give or take a year, about eight years ago I learned about a really amazing technique that I could do to manage and reduce my stress, among other things going on in my life. It was, and still is, referred to as HeartMath. Maybe some of you have heard about it. The HeartMath system is ultimately about connecting your mind and emotions and bringing them into alignment with the heart, which creates heart intelligence. A stress researcher, Doc Childre, who specifically created and developed the system in 1991, gathered a research team filled with experts, interdisciplinary, multi-professionals to help aid in the research of heart intelligence. With Childre and his team, they set out to bring hard science to the masses on the profound patterns of heart communication involving human, energetic, electromagnetic, neurochemical, biophysical, and hormonal information. Since their start, several studies have been conducted and more than several articles have been peer-reviewed and placed in scientific journals.

As it is stated in one particular article, “HeartMath as an Integrative, Personal, Social, and Global Healthcare System,” ‘The integral heart appears to have dimensions of increasing depth: physical, emotional, transpersonal, and transcultural.’ As well as, being ‘considered to be the center of the spiritual, intellectual and emotional life.’ Through many different walks of life and religions the heart is very important in the spiritual, transcendence viewpoint. The team made their main focus on the heart-based research spurring many other independent researchers to do the same, which has provided extensive validity to the original teams findings. The methods, tools, and techniques all stem from a central concept, Coherence.

HeartMath may be defined as the math of the heart rhythm variability (HRV), which becomes chaotic and disordered under stress, illnesses, both mental and physical, and more. The ‘Morse-codelike information patterns’ which is communicated by the heart to the brain, among other various bodily systems, with conjuncture of HRV could be the key to unlocking the knowledge of how to make better responses instead of reactions in situations. In movement with breathe, consciousness and energy, it is said that cell rhythms can be altered intentionally.

The joining of all different modalities, stemming from the connection between the heart and mind, inspires me to believe that there are those out there making the taboo an evidential reality for those who need proof that breathe, heart and mind can create your own peace.
