NGL’s Sebesta-Opelt takes gold, Luchterhand silver at Sparta Invitational


Neillsville-Greenwood-Loyal (NGL) traveled to Sparta Saturday for an invitational, with a few wrestlers making it to the podium in their respective weight classes, and one even claiming the top spot.
Results are as follows, organized by placing, then by weight class.
Hudzon Sebesta-Opelt (150) was named champion in his weight class after defeating Xavier Denman of Monona Grove/McFarland by 6-3 decision in the first-place match. He also defeated Charles Novotny of Mauston/Necedah by technical fall, 15-0, in the quarterfinal; and AJ Alesch of Holmen by 12-0 major decision in the semifinal.
Jakob Luchterhand (165) claimed second place. He picked up three wins: in the first championship round over Murphy Munson of Monona Grove/ McFarland, by technical fall 18-3; in the quarterfinal over Mason Tomesh of Regis/Altoona by technical fall 15-0; and in the semifinal over Jayden Zimbauer of Mauston/Necedah by fall (1:52). He lost the first-place match to Caleb Dennee of Marshfield by technical fall, 25-10, in 2:57.
Jackson Meyer (285) took third place. He defeated Dominik Quarne of New Lisbon by fall (1:36) in the quarterfi nal, followed by losing to Tristen Brennan of Holden in the semifinal by 4-3 decision. However, he pinned Benjamin Roth of Regis/Altoona in 3:45 in the third-place match to earn his placing.
Chase Lindner earned fifth place in the 106-pound division. He defeated Tayden Ringstad of DeForest in the fifth-place match by fall (1:39). He also defeated Jazmine Hernandez in the consolation semifinal (fall 1:33). He lost to Brock Needham of Holmen in the quarterfinal (fall 0:51).
Rydge Tibbett (113 pounds) also took fifth place. He lost to Cillian O’Connell of Regis/Altoona in the quarterfinal (fall 5:41) but won over Haakon Peterson of Mauston/ Necedah by 6-0 decision in the consolation semifinal.
Adam Kautzer (132) took fifth as well. He defeated Kaleo Cardoso of Monona Grove/McFarland by 11-0 major decision in the first championship round, as well as Myles Nawrot of Adams-Friendship in the the second consolation round (fall 1:31) and Hudson Jablonski of Reedsburg Area by 11-0 major decision in the consolation semifi nal. However, he fell to Peyton Oberg of Baraboo in the quarterfinal (4:19).
Dane Luchterhand (175) finished in sixth place in his weight division. He lost to Luke Rue of Monona Grove/ McFarland in the quarterfinal by 1-0 decision. However, he defeated Emerson Lau-Melby of Holmen in the consolation semifinal by major decision, 12-2. He lost to Bennett Rhodes of Reedsburg Area in the fifth-place match by 3-1 decision.
Gavyn McFarlane (157) earned seventh place after a couple of wins and a loss. In the second consolation round, he defeated Hayden Ballweg of Monona Grove/McFarland by 11-8 decision. In the consolation semifinal, he lost to Nathan Snodgrass of Holden by fall (0:30). In the seventh-place match, he defeated Tony Omosebi of Lodi by 8-0 major decision. Evan Kautzer (144) took eighth place. He pinned Jacob Zimbauer of Mauston/ Necedah in 3:17 in the first championship round. In the quarterfinal, he lost to Nolan Owen of Baraboo (fall 0:51). He also defeated Joseph White of Marshfield in the second consolation round by 2-1 decision, but lost to Jackson Wesner of Regis/Altoona by fall (0:52) in the consolation semifinal. He also lost to Vinny Klum of Viroqua in the seventh-place match, by fall (1:24).
Josh Reis (126) lost to Jacob Jax of New Lisbon in the first championship round (fall 1:44) and Liam Johnson of Lodi in the second consolation round.
Michael Harris (138) defeated David VanLoo of Viroqua by 6-0 decision in the first consolation round, but lost to Jaden Kondor of Sparta by fall (1:49) in the second consolation round.
Damian Sampson (190) lost to Clint Harris of Reedsburg Area by fall (3:54) in the second consolation round.
Wrestling for the win
Jakob Luchterhand of Neillsville-Greenwood-Loyal (NGL) works to pin his opponent from Regis/Altoona during the Cloverbelt Triangular at Abbotsford Jan. 18. He ended up pinning Gregory Troisi in 1:28 to score 6 points for his team.
