New year brings new events to CCL

The Colby Community Library (CCL) welcomes the new year of 2024 with events and programs for our current and future patrons.
Basket Weaving
Registration begins on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at noon for two basket classes at the CCL. Taught by instructor Jeni of Woven Blessings Basketry, the classes will be held on Saturday, Jan. 27, in the CCL Community Room.
The 9 a.m. class is a woven handled tote and is suggested for weavers with experience. The price of the class is $55 with canvas handles or $75 with leather handles. Choose the color of handles when registering. The basket should take four hours to weave by more experienced weavers. All supplies are included.
BASKET WEAVING CLASSES The Friends of the Colby Community Library will be hosting two basket making classes on Saturday, Jan. 27. The handled tote (on the left) will be offered at 9 a.m. and is for experienced weavers. The class to weave the basket with wooden pegs will begin at 1 p.m. There is a charge for each class, taught by Jeni from Woven Blessings. Registration begins on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at noon. Classes are limited to 14 adult participants.

The afternoon class begins at 1 p.m. and is a wall pocket basket with pegs to hang keys. This project is perfect for beginners. The price is $45 and colors will be chosen that day.
Make arrangements for payment within one week of registering. The classes are for adults only. Each class will be limited to 14 participants. Snacks and beverages are welcome. Classes are sponsored by the Friends of the CCL.
Cheese Days Sale
The Friends of the CCL will be collecting items for the annual Cheese Days Book and Movie Sale. Bring clean, saleable books, DVDs, CDs, and puzzles to Forward Bank, Colby location, during regular business hours, beginning Tuesday, Jan. 2. Please note: No Reader’s Digest Condensed books, VHS movies, magazines, or items in dirty condition. Also, remove any identifying names or stickers or price tags before donating. No books are being collected at the library. The Cheese Days Book and Movie Sale will be July 18-19, 2024, at the Colby Lions Shelter.
Penny Press
The penny press machine will officially open for business on January 2. The machine, donated in memory of James (Jim) R. Brill by his family, is located in the vestibule of the library.
Coupons were included in tax inserts for Colby-area residents, if you did not receive one, there are more available at the library. Each household will get one free penny pressed with their coupon, valid January 2 - May 31. The free penny is due to the generosity of Royal Credit Union, Taylor Credit Union, AbbyBank, Forward Bank, and Nicolet Bank. There are four pressed penny design choices; hopefully, people will be interested in purchasing additional pennies.
Passports to collect and hold the pressed pennies will be for sale by the Friends of the CCL. Also, a list of where penny press machines are located in Wisconsin (and now Colby will be on those lists) will be available to help patrons determine their next trip.
New Challenge
Adventure BINGO begins Tuesday, Jan. 2. Pick up BINGO cards for Adult/ Teen Adventure Bingo for books and/or Adult/Teen/Family Bingo cards for movies. Check out books and movies at the CCL and try to achieve 5 spaces in a row down, across, or diagonally for a BINGO. Turn in as many completed cards as you can by December 27, 2024, for chances to win Abby/Colby Chamber Certificates.

The CCL Afternoon book club will meet on Tuesday, January 16 at 1 p.m. to discuss the book Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult. The CCL Evening Book Club will meet Tuesday, January 16 at 6 p.m. Lisa Brill will lead the discussion of Ruta Sepetys’ Salt to the Sea.
Craft and Hobby
Friday, Jan. 19, will be Craft and Hobby night beginning at 4 p.m. Bring individual crafts to work on in the company of others. If you plan on attending, please let the library staff know. Snacks and beverages are welcome.
Winter Crafts
Visit the craft table in the library to pick up winter crafts to “Take and Make.” Craft kits are free, and there are some for both youth and adults.
“New” Lists
“New” lists are available. Wondering what new books were added to the CCL collection in 2023? Pick up the list. Want to view movies purchased in 2023? We have a list of those. Each year, Director Vicky Calmes compiles a list of favorite books in her “Best Reads” list. They are numbered from 40 down to number one (the favorite) with short blurbs to entice readers. In addition to the new 2023 list, there are copies of past “best reads” lists dating back to 2009. Also, a packet of all the books read by the book clubs (since 2006), with member ratings, is printed and available.
Tax Forms
Basic paper forms will be arriving sometime in late January and February for both Wisconsin and federal taxes. Look for them in a special rack in the vestibule of the library. Computers are also available to print forms not supplied to libraries for a fee. Fax, scanner, and copying services are available for a charge. Remember staff members are not tax consultants.
Winter Hours
Winter hours, through May 2024, are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from noon - 7 p.m.
The library will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Curbside service is always available during open hours. Call the library at 715-223-2000 for assistance. Watch for any changes on the CCL website and Facebook page or in the Tribune-Phonograph.
