The Gilman School Board will decide the future direction of its administrative team at its January meeting as it plans for the retirement of current district administrator Mark Heyerdahl at the end of the school year. The board will look at the fiscal and educational affects of different administrative options.

Since Heyerdahl was hired, the district has been led by a part-time district administrator and one principal for all grade levels. Because Heyerdahl had already retired as a full-time administrator, the district was only responsible for a salary based on the percentage of time for which he is contracted. Heyerdahl is currently on a 50 percent schedule, which equates to a $60,000 budget impact.

The State Board of Control has taken a conservative position in its duty of controlling counties in erecting county insane hospitals. Under the law the board is given supervising authority over counties in this particular, and without the consent of the board no county can establish such an institution. So many applications have been made to the board by counties for permission to establish such hospitals that the board has felt it necessary not only to take some action to retain unnecessary building by the counties but has formulated its policy for several years to come.

For the above reason the board thinks it would not be good policy to authorize the erection of any additional county asylum, unless it is well understood that but few inmates can probably be assigned to it for the next three years, except those chargeable to the county in which the asylum is located.
