Stratford Journal 50 years ago... thursday, november 15, 1973 Fenwood News On Saturday afternoon the Fenwood fire department was called to the Dennis Bohman home because of a fire within the walls of their home. Mr. and Mrs. Bohman were gone at the time. Mr. Bohman had gone hunting and Mrs. Bohman had gone to Minnesota to attend the wedding of her brother. At 3:30 the Edgar fire department was called and in about an hour, they had the fire extinguished. Many of the hunters who happened to be in town and any of the men who were available, helped to fight the fire. 25 years ago... wednesday, November 25, 1998 Gun deer season opens with a bang The deer registration call-in after the first two days of the 1998 deer gun season shows an increase in harvest of 22 percent from a year earlier. 55,704 deer were registered during the first two days of the season. Of the total registered 28,640 were antlered. “This is a reflection of a couple of things, one that the status of the herd is in good shape and we had extremely good weather for hunters working for us this year,” according to Mike Gappa of the DNR. Paintings on display Creativity blossomed as seven area residents took part in a beginning floral painting class at Stratford High School. In preparation for the class, students gathered their favorite floral pictures from calendars and seed catalogs to use as subjects. Participants were Marge Austin, Faye McNeely, Ron Bauer, Karen Brey, Carol Dennee, Genny Bornbach, and Carol Knetter.
Record Review 50 years ago... thursday, November 22, 1973 Athens FHA is hostess to five-school meeting Approximately 175 FHA’ers held a Fall Rally at Athens High School for the purpose of launching a successful FHA school year. Schools participating were Athens, Edgar, Marathon, D.C. Everest and Mosinee.
Guest speaker was Mrs. John Haines who spoke on “Women’s Credit.” Patsy Ellenbecker, president of Athens FHA chapter, presided over the meeting. Cathy Gajewski led the relaxers. The Athens poster was made by Jane Becker and Marjean Petznick. Name tags were designed by EmaRita Grenwalt and Sharon Pawlowski. 25 years ago... wednesday, November 25, 1998 Marathon board agreed to keep cross-county as a sport The Marathon Board of Education agreed to keep cross country as a varsity sport for the 1999-2000 season. Board members voted two years ago to try cross country as an experiment, watching if it attracted sufficient athletes. The fall sport, coached by Jim Allmann, has attracted enough participants and entered one runner in theWIAA state finals.
In other business: It was announced that the two school board seats currently held by Connie Ruplinger and Nathan Myszka will be up for election in the spring. Leanne Leffel was named high school cheerleader coach. Board members named Sharon Seubert as the board’s delegate to the Wisconsin Association of School Boards.

Edgar High School football players and coaches hold aloft a silver runner-up trophy following Thursday’s 29-8 loss to the Wrightstown Tigers at Camp Randall, UW-Madison. The championship game is Edgar’s fourth trip to the state finals and second time to place in a runner-up position.

Lee Zemski, Marathon, had a short but sweet deer hunt this year. Zemski bagged this 10 point buck with a 19 inch antler spread at 7 a.m. last Saturday, opening morning. Zemski said that he intends to have the buck mounted.
