Edgar senior running back Karter Butt enjoyed a historic night on Friday in the Edgar varsity football team’s 52-26 road win against Boyceville in a WIAA Division 7 Level 3 game.

Butt was involved in all seven of the Wildcats’ offensive touchdowns against the Bulldogs. He ran the football 37 times for 317 yards and six touchdowns and he threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Brett Baumgartner in the third quarter. Butt accounted for 73 percent of Edgar’s 437 total rushing yards and 71 percent of Edgar’s 447 total offensive yards.

His 317 rushing yards on Friday against Boyceville broke an Edgar school record set by Tyler Berg from 1997-99. Butt now has 4,053 career rushing yards while Berg is second with 3,935. Butt’s 317 rushing yards on Friday also tied Edgar’s school record for most rushing yards in a single

No. 2 playoff seed Edgar got off to a great start on Friday against No. 1 seed Boyceville. Butt ran for a 15-yard touchdown but Edgar’s two-point conversion failed. Junior linebacker Jase Apelbeck blocked Boyceville’s punt for a safety. Butt ran for both a three-yard touchdown and the two-point conversion to give the Wildcats a 16-0 lead at the end of the first quarter Undefeated Boyceville wasn’t going to just lay down and let Edgar win the game. Bulldogs senior halfback Nick Olson ran for a 35-yard touchdown but the twopoint conversion pass failed. Edgar still led, 16-6. The Wildcats answered the Bulldogs’ score with Butt’s 54-yard touchdown run. Senior Harrison Graveen kicked the successful extra point to give Edgar a 23-6 advantage.

The Bulldogs still had plenty of fight left in them. Boyceville sophomore quarterback Cason Roemhild threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to sophomore fullback Zach Hellendrung and the pair also connected on the successful two-point conversion to cut Edgar’s lead to 23-14. Butt ran for both a 4-yard touchdown and the two-point conversion to give the Wildcats a more comfortable 31-14 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter, Roemhild threw an 82-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Caden Wold but the two-point conversion run failed. Edgar still led, 31-20. Butt took a break from running for touchdowns to use his arm for a 18-yard halfback throw to senior tight end Baumgartner for a touchdown. Graveen kicked the successful extra point to give Edgar a 3820 lead.

Roemhild threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Wold but the two-point conversion run failed as Edgar still led, 38-26, at the end of the third quarter. Edgar’s defense held Boyceville scoreless in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Butt was at it again by running for touchdowns of eight and 47 yards. Graveen kicked the extra points after both of Butt’s touchdowns for Edgar.

Edgar senior Kohlbe Weisenberger ran the football eight times for 69 yards and Apfelbeck ran nine times for 41 yards. Olson led Boyceville in rushing with 15 carries for 129 yards and a touchdown while Wold paced the Bulldogs in receiving with two receptions for 132 yards and two touchdowns.

Linebackers Butt, Apfelbeck and Weisenberger led Edgar’s defense with six tackles apiece. Senior defensive back Teegan Streit had five tackles and an interception. His younger brother, sophomore defensive back Tucker Streit, also had an interception.

Edgar improves its record to 11-1 this season and plays at 7 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 10, against familiar playoff foe Bangor, 11-1, in a WIAA Division 7 Level 4 playoff game at Durand/Arkansaw High School. No. 3 seed Bangor advanced to play Edgar after beating Scenic Bluffs Conference foe and No. 1 seed Cashton, 17-12, on the road Friday. Edgar last played Bangor in the 2019 playoffs when the Wildcats beat the Cardinals, 27-7, in a Level 4 game at Carson Park in Eau Claire. Bangor defeated Edgar, 16-8, in a 2017 Level 3 playoff game in Edgar. The Wildcats beat the Cardinals, 29-6, in a 2016 Level 4 playoff game at Carson Park.

Butt is currently third on Edgar’s career touchdowns record book with 67. He has a chance in this Friday’s Level 4 playoff game against Bangor to surpass Schueller’s 69 touchdowns from 2009-11 or even Berg’s 70 touchdowns from 1997-99. Butt is also currently third in Edgar’s record book in most rushing yards in a single season with 1,586. He has a shot in Friday’s game to surpass Bargender’s 1,623 rushing yards in the 1972 season. Berg holds the school record with 2,053 yards in the 1998 season.

The winner of Friday’s Level 4 playoff game between Edgar and Bangor will advance to the Division 7 state championship at 10 a.m. next Thursday, Nov. 16, at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. Edgar or Bangor will face the winner of Friday’s other Level 4 game between No. 1 seed and unbeaten Reedsville against No. 3 seed Black Hawk/Warren, Ill., at Elkhorn Area High School.
