The Colby golf team competed in the WIAA Division 3 regional meet held at Pine Valley Golf Course near Marathon last Tuesday and tied for seventh place out of the 10 teams present.
The Hornets finished with a final score of 395 on the par 71, 18-hole course, tying them with the Pacelli Cardinals. The hosting Marathon team took first place in the team competition, ending the day with a score of 344. Newman Catholic was 20 strokes behind, taking the second place with a score of 364. Weyauwega-Fremont and Marion came in closely behind, securing the final two team spots at sectionals by finishing with scores of 370 and 371 respectively.
Cole Haueser of Weyauwega-Fremont took home the individual regional title on Tuesday, shooting a 79. Samuel Groeschl of Iola-Scandanavia, Chevy Cook of Marathon, and Jacob Fox of Newman Catholic all tied for second place after completing the course in 82 strokes.
Gavin Voss had his best meet of the season for the Hornets. The senior shot a 90, which was good enough for 12th place and qualification for sectionals as an individual. Voss started out his day strong, shooting a 43 on the front nine. A trio of bogeys to start the day set him up well and he would end the first half with some solid shooting, getting a birdie on the par 4 eighth hole and collecting bogeys on four of the final five holes. The Hornet senior kept up his consistency on the back nine, shooting for par on the 11th hole and never scoring more than a double bogey on any of the holes.
Braiden Johnson finished as the Hornets second-best golfer on Tuesday, shooting a 96 to take 21st overall. While he had a bit of a slower start, Johnson began to find his footing towards the end of the front nine. He shot for par on hole six and then bogeyed on holes seven and eight. Three par on 11, 13 and 15 helped Johnson have the Hornets best score on the back nine, ending with a 46 on the second half of the course.
Brody Viegut was not far behind Johnson, tying for 22nd with a score of 98. Par on holes two and six were the highlights of Viegut’s first half. After some tough holes to start the second half, he bounced back with a par on hole 13 and ended his run with a solid finish, shooting for par on holes 16 and 18 and getting a bogey on hole 17. Viegut shot a 49 on both

He shot a 55 on the first nine and a 56 in the second half of the course.
