The Colby/Abbotsford swim team improved to 5-1 in their Great Northern Conference duals after handily defeating Tomahawk at home on Thursday afternoon. The co-op squad dominated the affair, winning all 11 events en route to a 108-50 victory.

On top of winning every event, Colby/ Abby also took the top two spots in six of the varsity races, allowing them to pull away from their conference foe.

Madisyn Schraufnagel won all four events that she participated in during Thursday night’s meet. The junior helped her relay team of Kate Sheahan, Hazel Flink and McKinley Meyer grab the top spot in the 200-yard medley relay to open the competition, defeating the second place Tomahawk squad by three seconds with a time of 2:15.45. Schraufnagel then won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:23.87, followed by teammate Bryleigh Boyer, who posted a time of 2:48.30, in one of the six events in which the co-op captured both first and second place.

Colby/Abby also went back-to-back in the 200-yard freestyle relay, one of the closest races of the evening. The team of Schraufnagel, Meyer, Boyer and Jordan Jakel narrowly edged out their teammates Sheahan, Flink, Brezlyn Boyer and Ella Baumann, posting times of 1:59.22 and 1:59.79 respectively. The third place Tomahawk squad was not far behind, putting up a time of 2:00.58.

Schraufnagel’s final win came in the next event, the 100-yard backstroke. There she put together a time of 1:05.47, cruising to a 12 second win over the next closest competitor. Sheahan took third in the event for Colby/Abby, posting a time of 1:27.41.

Jakel, Chloe Cihlar and Brezlyn Boyer all won three of their events on Thursday.

Jakel, in addition to her win in the 200yard freestyle relay, took first in the 100yard butterfly with a time of 1:08.12, winning by five seconds. She also grabbed the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke, her time of 1:22.13 giving her a three second advantage in the race.

Cihlar, as she has done several times already this season, won both the shortest and longest events of the meet. A time of 26.69 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle earned her first place while a 6:15.38 performance in the 500-yard freestyle was the fastest of the day. She was also part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that also included both Brezyln and Bryleigh Boyer and Ella Baumann that took first place with a time of 4:20.57.

Brezlyn Boyer notched two individual event victories by putting up a time of 2:15.09 in the 200-yard freestyle and finishing the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:00.65.

Second place finishes for Colby/Abby included Bryleigh Boyer in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:48.30 and the 500yard freestyle with a time of 6:45.38, Flink in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:13.88, Baumann in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:04.43, and Sage Lueth with a time of 1:25.88 in the 100yard breaststroke.

Colby/Abby will finish their regular season dual campaign with their toughest challenge yet. The team will travel to Rhinelander this coming Thursday, Oct. 17 to take on the undefeated Hodags. The reigning conference champs look just as dominant as ever, scoring over 115 points in every single conference meet this season. The final dual of the year is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

MAKING WAVES - Jordan Jakel takes an early lead in the 100-yard breaststroke. The junior won the event, helping the co-op to a clean sweep of the Hatchets last Thursday.
