Swim co-op now 3-0 in GNC after win at Antigo
The Colby-Abby swim team remained undefeated in the Great Northern conference by claiming their third straight victory last Thursday when they defeated the Antigo Red Robins 108-35 on the road.
The home Antigo squad won the first event of the day, but the co-op controlled the rest of the affair, taking first in nine of the 11 competitions. The Red Robins could not field swimmers in four of those events, which was partially responsible for the lopsided final.
Chloe Cihlar claimed first in all four events she participated in. The junior won the second event of the afternoon, the 200-meter freestyle, finishing with a time of 2:27.30. She also topped the longest event of the day, the 400-meter freestyle, with a time of 5:24.97.
Cihlar was also part of Colby- Abby’s two winning relay teams. The 200-meter relay team of Cihlar, Brezlyn Boyer, Bryleigh Boyer and McKinley Meyer defeated their teammates Madisyn Schraufnagel, Sage Lueth, Olivia Krause and Zeline Lintrup in the event, one of four events that the Red Robins failed to have an entry in. The victorious relay posted a time 2:15.87 while the second place team had a time of 2:20.76.
The co-op’s other victorious relay of Cihlar, Krause, Jordan Jakel and Brezlyn Boyer took first in the final event of the day, the 400-meter freestyle relay, where they defeated the Antigo team by six seconds with a time of 4:50.52.
Schraufnagel took first in her two individual events. She narrowly defeated Antigo’s Chloe Tainter in the closest race of the afternoon in the 100-meter butterfly. The co-op sophomore had a slim lead after the 50 meters, holding just a three-tenths-of-a-second advantage over Tainter, but managed to hold off the Red Robin’s swimmer to notch a victory for Colby-Abby, posting a final time of 1:10.32 in the event. Schraufnagel also took first in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:48.28.
Brezlyn Boyer comfortably won the 100-meter breaststroke, posting a time of 1:28.81, which was ten seconds faster than Antigo’s second place swimmer.
Bryleigh Boyer and Lintrup also picked up first place finishes on Thursday. Boyer won the 200-meter IM with a time of 3:26.76 and Lintrup’s time of 1:12.82 was fastest in the 100-meter freestyle. Teammates Lueth and Krause took second in the respective events, posting times of 3:50.22 and 1:17.19.
Other second place finishes for the co-op included Jakel in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 32.00, Rayna Hamus in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:43.12 and Brezlyn Boyer in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:31.84. The co-op’s relay team of Schraufnagel, Lueth, Meyer and Hazel Flink also took second in the 200-meter medley relay, posting a time of 2:36.47.
The win put the Colby-Abby team’s record at 3-0 in conference meets, though their schedule will only get more difficult from here. Their next matchup will be against the 2-1 Medford Red Raiders at home this Thursday, Sept. 21. The start time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Medford is coming off a 11744 win over Tomahawk and similarly defeated Antigo earlier in the season with a 126-36 victory. The Raiders’ sole defeat came at the hands of conference favorite Rhinelander, which is the only other team other than the Colby-Abby squad to remain undefeated.
The swim team also hosted Black River Falls on Tuesday for a non-conference dual. The Colby-Abby club notched their fourth straight victory in the contest, taking down the Tigers 97-69.
The co-op won nine of the 11 events, including the first five of the afternoon.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Madisyn Schraufnagel, Jordan Jakel and Brezlyn and Bryleigh Boyer started the meet off with a victory, defeating BRF’s team by two seconds with a time of 2:06.18. Chloe Cihlar then picked up a win in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:11.80 and Schraufnagel added another victory in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:22.95.
Zeline Lintrup and Jordan Jakel finished neck and neck in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing with times of 29.12 and 29.18 to take first and second respectively in the event. Jakel then went on to take first in the next event, the 100-yard buttefly, finishing in 1:09.26. Cihlar picked up her second win of the day in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:05.61 and Schraufnagel won her second individual event, the 100yard backstroke, with a time of 1:04.77.
200-yard freestyle relay of Brezlyn Boyer, Jakel, Lintrup and Cihlar as well as the 400yard freestyle relay of Olivia Krause, Lintrup, Schraufnagel and Cihlar both claimed the top spots in their respective events, putting in times of 1:52.58 and 4:22.42 respectively.
